Close Call With A Wolf
Headed out early this morning and we got a jump fairly quick. Had been running maybe a hour and already had gotten 7 clips of the hare. Dogs were going to cross the road to the west of me when I looked way down the road I seen something large and black about 350 yards or more standing in the road, at first I thought bear, maybe a humane which would be strange this early in the morning and coming from that direction. I zoomed way in on my camera and new rite away it was a wolf, as soon as I got focused on him here he came at a trot, head perked up. Instantly I numbed up and started screaming for dogs and pushing buttons, the wolf slammed on the brakes and dove into the woods on the North side. Got everyone caught up and came home. Thinking back I had everything under control, dogs on the line pretty much at my feet, wished I would have been calm enough to push the record button and got a clip of it running towards the dogs. Anyhow, here is the clips I got this morning.

Re: Close Call With A Wolf
You were lucky to actually see one. Usually they are just there but stay out of sight. I have had them so close I could hear the movement but could not see them. Snow tells all. Glad it went well for your dogs.

I had a couple come in howling to a cat race the other day. They got within 200yds of my dogs before I got my dogs stopped and called out. I went back with my predator call and worked em a bit. One will not be chasing my dogs anymore.

i would think we would have enough technology now that we could mount a camera and make a vest attached with some type of guns and use a dog to kill wolves.

Way to go. For us hound guys that have been on ground zero of the western wolf wars. We want dead wolves, if there are no pictures there is no evidence. If there is evidence you will have tag them and go through the hoopla of checking them in. Why does a guy want to waste his day in dealing with dead vermin.

Re: Close Call With A Wolf
Starting around 2000 we started having occasional wolves coming south of the border through our area, in the winter of 2003 - 2004 a pack spent several weeks in the drainage to my northwest as the years went by every year they leap frogged a drainage or two south a year. By 2008 they had pretty much swept through every drainage in NW MT. There is nothing close to such a disaster that ever happened in our hunting world. For you hunters that have not witnessed ripped up dogs deer & elk numbers collapsed by 50% will never be able to comprehend the hate that we hound guys in wolf country have over wolves.
Look there is a very good chance that he saw it dead but if he stated that on this site he could've been questioned by FWP why he didn't check it in. So if someone in wolf country hints that they shot a wolf it is best to take his word and not ask to many questions.

Why would one even post it on the www if that was the case?

Re: Close Call With A Wolf
If I had a tag I would shot it real simple. If I didn't I sure wouldn't post that I shot one on a public forum. I don't claim to be real smart but am sure enough that smart. If he posted it on here I would assume he had a tag! That's why I wanted to see pics. Andy
