Rickeylane06 just curious why if wanting to catch bobcats you are not going with a well know strain of bobcat dogs in your area? It seems like you are setting yourself up for failure with elkhounds and beagles?

The beagle is out of a stock that runs a good bit of cats. Some guys i work with recommended him to me as they chase coyotes with beagles and use to tree alot of Bobs. The Elkhounds Twist, well that is just an experiment. I love the breed and am always impressed with their ability to flush game. If it don't pan out, Ill get me a Plott dog and start over.

Its not an original idea. Ive heard of people doing it out west with elkhounds and Likas. I would like some more insight on the matter as well. Your thoughts Twist?

All the crosses like you are talking have been tried through out the years if the were successful they would still be around. Yes a couple may work here and there. If you are wanting to catch cats consistantly go with a proven strain of cat dogs and you won't be wasting alot of valuable time. Just like this thread we are on now where are all theses ultimate bobcat dogs that were suppose to be made? A waste of time and energy. But I have to say it has been a comical read. I've been at it alot of years and never seen not heard of any bobcat hunters using Elkhound cross Lika dogs to catch bobcat.

I can respect your experience and opinion. But i know guys treeing Cats with Beagles. And alot of Coon and bear hunters here has an Elkhound in their kennel. Im not planning to cross any breeds. I want to use the Beagle as a scent hound. If it can work a track and jump a cat, A Elkhound could finish the race. They are quiet on a track and work fast. And a better tree dog, their may be none.

But there are of testimonies to Elkhounds capabilities and success. Your not going to find as many as the common hound simply because there are far less Elkhounds than
hound breeds .If you look across sees to the North, there are far more Spitz breeds used for hunting than hounds. If they are guilty of anything , it is the lack of a cold nose and they are not dogs for warm whether. Twist you also said that if they were a proven hunting dog that they would still be around. Well they have been a hunting/ treeing/ bay dog for 6000 years. Thsts a pretty good run.

We are on a bobcat thread if they have been proven with great success on bobcat they would be used here for that. Give them a try and let me know your success. I'll be waiting for pics and videos. Hope they work for you.

Re: !!! The Ultimate Bobcat Dog...Part 1.5 !!!
Lots of dogs out there that never have the chance to reach their potential from a lack of hunting or not enough game being put on. Usually see the same fellas with good dogs year in and out and some wanta be's who never figure it out. Lots of good hounds but it would be nice if they all were a complete package.
