Shock collar deer breaking

Postby CoyoteChaser » Mon Feb 24, 2025 10:31 am

I have 1 and 3 year old coyote hound. They aren’t deer broke. I use the collar but at that age how hard should I be hitting them with the shock. I have an alpha.

That depends greatly on the dogs maturity, every dog responds differently to the shock collar. Some the tiniest amount of negative reinforcement is plenty and some you may need to turn it up and hold that button to stop them. Also consider the dogs reaction to it afterwards, I have a few sensitive dogs that if u even tone them they may not hunt the rest of the day. A rancher buddy of mine just told me last week that he had just bought some e-collars for his young cow dogs because he’s been catching them chasing his heifers when they shouldn’t be, only advice I gave him was to never push that button with his emotions. You can ruin any type of dog wether a cow dog or hound by shocking them because your angry. Are you seeing the dogs chasing deer or at least finding their tracks on deer tracks? I’m very careful to be 100 percent certain before I shock a dog.

Yes I always shock them if I actually see them run a deer. I shock them but eventually they’ll get right back on one.

Are u just free casting these dogs? Or seeing a coyote and dumping them on it? Also what type of dog are they? Your profile says your in Illinois, do you get much snow at all?

Yeah, we free cast. Also dump on them when spotted. I run Goodmans which is a strain of Walker. We occasionally get snow. I’m just trying to get them deer broke which is really hard right now to do.
