Re: government line hounds
Most of Bridgers stuff came from Wade Lemon and Kim Payne I believe, and most of Wades stuff came from Van Johnson. I think about the oldest stuff That is the most pure is Kim Payne's dogs as he and his father were government hunters.
Van had dogs long before he became a government hunter.

Re: government line hounds
I've come back to this post several times, and I still can't figure out what it is you want to know. Government hunters have never been any different than the rest of the lion hunters in the west, with the exception of having to hunt every day, and doing it for a living without the presence of a client. To the best of my knowlege, all of them, past and present, hunt lines, or a combination of lines, that have been around for decades. There are some exceptions from time to time, with the introduction of some "new" blood, but outside of California, most dogs owned by Government hunters can be traced back to lines that are still mostly intact today. There are exceptions, of course. For example.. The old Goswick lines have been watered down from interjecting other lines, as well as, completely different dogs. Most of the time, with the death of the person that a certain "line" of dogs is known for, it's only a matter of time before those genetics start changing. It happens with people that are still alive, as well. Larry Hendrix (I know, he's not a gov't hunter) has a line of dogs that he has developed. He has done this with the help of a couple of close friends, and by breeding dogs from other people's lines. When Larry's gone, how long will it take for "his" dogs to cease to exist? For a lot of these guys, they import different blood from time to time. Does that change "their dogs"? Maybe I'm just ranting, but what exactly are you looking for?

Where did he come from or where did you get him from. That might help.

Re: government line hounds
Sounds like a high tan, but that just means that he has walker, and black and tan. If you had ANY more info, it might help. Can you follow a trail backward at all? Who did you get him from, then who...... There are far too many possibilities, from govt guys, to guides, to weekend warriors, to ranchers, to maybe even a guy that was given a hound pup, and then gave it to someone that would hunt it.

Re: government line hounds
I would say it is a safe bet it didn't come from Bridger then.

Re: government line hounds
Was the dog supposed to come from a gov't hunter, and if so, how old is the dog? That might be a place to start, since there are only a very small number of G men hunting past and present in New Mexico. Also, did the guy hunt bears AND lions, or just one or the other?

Re: government line hounds
That narrows it down considerably. Bill Nelson just got rid of most of his dogs, and no longer uses them for work. I can't recall the last name of a young man on the western side of the state that hunts with dogs, Bency could help with Brandon's last name. I may be wrong, but I believe that Brandon has a lot of Sam Dieringer dogs (from AZ, and dang good ones!) I'm not aware of anyone in the northern part of the state, but others like Mike Leonard, or someone else might be able to help.

Re: government line hounds
i don't believe they come from an older man. i'm trying to get a phone number to know for sure. i have high hopes for him due to the fact that what i know bout g hunters is they make their living off their dogs and ability to catch game with them and should have a real good nose.
