One has to choose the best rifle, caliber and load for fox. Depending upon range, load and rifleman skills, .17 HMR might not produce an instant kill. I would aim for an instant kill but one might also be concerned about saving the pelt for market value. .22 Long Rifle doesn't seem long range and accurate enough for an open field. .223/5.56 might ruin furs.
