if you want to know what a big bear is just come hunt with me. I'll show you a 100# er and if what your tree isn't any bigger then you haven't seen a big one yet.

unless it is BAYED and FIGHTING on the ground who cares .up a tree "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED let it run another day .Take some pics and gather up the hounds . a bayed bear on the other hand fighting ,size never enters the equation. Over the years I think we have had to shoot as may 125 lb Ridge /Swamp runners as 350 lb bears on the ground .Even some of the big bears had different size heads.

From the guy's question, he probably doesn't have as much experience as other hound guys would in judging animals. So if he trees an animal, it's legal, and there are a bunch around what difference does it make if he tips it out. I love to hunt for big critters for me or a close buddy, but I also get a kick out of helping an inexperience hunters bag something. At the minimum you have allowed someone else a new experience that they will probably talk highly about to other non-hounders.
Now if you've got to hunt all day to find a track or 10 years go by and everything needs to come, then something is out of whack. It's all relative to the area a guy hunts in and that is tough to figure out on the i-net.

I would rather exsplain to him what a bigger animal looks like and when he knocks it out have him be happy with it.
Not have him shoot out a bunch of game, sows, two year old cubs ect. till he learns it for himself. (sows with cubs stashed) Than get a bigger animal that he really wants.
I would say by the question he is looking for a little larger specimen or he would't have asked the question. Finally, alot of newer hunters from all our areas read this and I would not want them thinking thats the way to learn what a big animal looks like.
Tree a bunch and when you tree a gooder you'll know. If you have to ask or wonder when your standing under the tree he's too small.

BlacktailStalker wrote:A real big bears ears (350-400lbs+) will appear small and look like they're growing out the side of his head, not on top and you can often "fit" 3 more between them.
His face will be slightly dished and there will be a pronounced crease up his forehead, something that only appears on a mature bear.
You can also use the tree (if its a big one) to judge the size of the bear by comparing its torso to the trunk.
.
Good info. The tree trunk thing works well even for the length of the bear if he is standing out on a good limb.

In Alaska, we not only look at the ears, but look at the length of the nose...if it looks long and skinny, it's small...if the nose looks short and fat, with ears that are not barely visible, its big....
Re: WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO JUDGE A BEARS SIZE!
i would say the ears, if the ears r close together and the ears look tall and pointed its a pretty small bear but if ther spread apart pretty well and short and rounded out its usually a good size, thats what i go by
