Trail Camera Clips

Post by HoundDawg »

I've always believed I knew my country here well, and knew where the lions traveled and crossed. So I decided to test that belief with a trail camera. No water anywhere around here, and I chose a saddle I know of instead. I got lucky with a couple of clips.

Day time lion and what appears to be a pregnant female with a docked tail. (What kind of twisted, sick person would dock a lions tail?) :)

As for the old Wiley Carroll debate about how a lion scratches, watch that day time clip very closely boys!! Enjoy. -Dawg

Those are some really neat videos. What kind of trail cam are you using? I keep thinking it would be cool to set some out but I get lazy and I always remember to do it when I'm on the mountain and not finding any tracks!

Good stuff, thanks for sharin

Very cool clips dawg.
But man what am I going to do, I thought they always travel away from the direction of the scratch!
He broke the rules and doubled back, thats just not playing fair !
I woulda been shocking and switchin' my dogs for running back tracks and sold them as "awesome"

Did have some kind of scent as a attractor or was it just a area that they marked. Dewey

That last comment houndnem or whatever is bit unlearned. I will admit that this pudge female seems to be in a place where she is doing fine( hope she does as well after the kids come along); but I want to ask a question of the few old time lion men on this forum.

WHAT GOOD IS A LION'S LONG TAIL?????

Hate to think I am an old timer but the more hiking I do I carry a walking stick for better balance and believe the big old cat uses it tail for the same reason  later, Andy

Wow mike, sorry I'm so unlearned. how could I possably know as much as you. I'm not saying that I go around dockin tails, but I'll tell you this it don't hurt my feelings when I tree one that is docked. the reason is at least I know the 80 lb female isn't gona get ran down by an outfitter and sold to a client. I know what a lion uses it's tail for, I'm not stupid, but I have seen plenty of plump lions running around with docked tails. looks like they do fine to me, but I'm not the mighty mike leonard either so I guess I wouldn't know.
dam I hate know it alls that think they are better than everybody else.

I'm with you houndnem. Plenty of lions make a living just fine without a tail. Actually had a discussion about it with one of the more well known and respected lion hunters around during a fall bear hunt in Ca. Those words came right out of his mouth also, I think Mike Leonard probably knows who the guy is, what was the guys name again.... oh yeah, it was Jeff Allen

Another way to look at it- IF, and its a very big if, that cat does struggle to maintain coordination once into old age, how many years of reproduction did that female get bought by getting her tail docked 1-8 years prior? What are the odds that she would have made it thru the season she got her tail bobbed had it been intact? How many litters of kittens can thank the guy that bobbed moms tail for being born before she started running into trees and walking in circles because as time went on she got less and less used to having a short tail. Ha!

C'mon Mike, everybody knows you're the only real old time lion hunter on this forum

Well Stupid,

You have to be quick on your feet, and keep your pruning shears sharp. :D

I usually "let" the new guy do it.
