Garmin Owners! Please Read!!!

Post by Steve White »

I am doing a little research on Garmin ownership. So as to give garmin a better understanding of who their users are nad how they use the equipment. I am sure what most folks here are using the units for. Still if you are reading this and only hunt bird dogs let me know.

Otherwise I would like to know if you are using your Garmin as a primary tracking device. I do understand that some of you are double collaring the dogs. That is fine, but which tracking device to you use the most.

Thanks for your help as this is to help you!!!

Ive got an old johnson merlin and a garmin. I mainly just use my garmin. its also kinda
nice because you can tell what theyre running alot of times by the track on the hand
held, since i have one dog thats kind of trashy :D But i mostly hunt coon so they dont get out of range most of the time.

The dogs never leave the truck without them on. That being said I also double collar with the telemetry just to be on the safe side. I don't trust the Garmins completely due to the battery life and I don't think they are made durable enough for everyday use. I like the five second update but hate the battery life on that setting. The weight of the collar doesn't matter to much to me if they increased the battery size since it about has to be less weight than running two collars. Good product it just needs a bit of tweaking to be a great product.

I primarily use the Garmin but I have love hate relationship with it.I love it when it is working and hate it when it isn't.I have only had it for two years and have already gone through 3 defective collars and now my range ain't worth a damn for some reason.I also only have one wall charger out of three that will work. For some reason two of them will just not make contact.I will be glad when they figure out a product that is more durable.

I run just the garmin, sold my telemetry units. I run where I can drive whithin about 3-4 miles of just about anywhere though. Battery life without a doubt is by far the number one concern I have however.

As a convenience though I would suggest a bullet proof belt pouch to carry it in. Don't know if you hunt cats but that little chincy plastic clip lasted me about a day, the second one didn't make it up the first hill.

Great product overall.

I run the garmin only on my Decoy dogs. But I would never turn my dogs loose with only the garmin on the dog. I always double collar with telemitry.
I am like Trueblue, it is a love /HATE relationship. The range sucks and the battery life on the collars, sucks, the charging connections, on the collars, sucks, the long range antenas sucks. The base that connects the antena, Sucks. The compass sucks. And their costomer service sucks. But other than that I love it.

They need to make them lion proof... you know so when a lion get ahold of them and bites them they dont break.
I'm thankful for being dumb and slow, then i don't have to over think this stuff.

Ditto. Plus the durability of components is not what it should be.

I run the Garmin and telemetry collars on.. I don't understand people who don't (no offense)

I'm always loosing range, or collars are not updating like they should.. generally when I'm out looking for the idiot pup who ran by the truck on the way back from the tree and kept running down the road.. It showed her 30 yards away for 2 hours and she had made it about 6 miles  Thank goodness for the old beep beep that night.. It never did update her collar again until I turned it off and reconnected it..
