RIP Burger

Post by chilcotin hillbilly »

I lost Burger today on a lion. The best dog I have had in my short hounding career. He got it done on cougar, bear and lynx and even treed a grizzly. I was lucky to only loose Burger as I kicked the cat off Zoey as she had Zoey by the face.
To young of a dog to put to high on a pedestal but my families favorite.

Thats a tough pill to swollow, very sorry for your loss.
The fascination of hunting cougar with hounds lies in the discovery and unravelling of a complicated trail, watching an honest hound strike out on a track that has been found and read, and finally bringing the animal to bay so that you can see it for yourself---Jerry A. Lewis

Dam chilcottin! I'm sorry to hear that. what happened? I have lost a few lead dogs along the way and it's hard, but my lead now is a familly pet also. she had some close brushes with death the last couple weeks and she aint out of the woods yet, but I have been trying to understand how me and my kids will deal with her death when it happens. something different between a good hound and a good "pet hound". keep your head up, Jared.

Thanks for the kind words guys.
This was a strange one as it was a smoker track after a fresh 6 inch dump. A young cat to boot. The plan was to try and find a track and run it in the morning and go with the sleds and clear some trail for the snowmachines as my clients start showing up next week. I always start a track with Rudy and Burger, I don't kow why but they are my go to hounds that I rely on when guiding. I only keep 4 dogs and hunt 2 at a time when guiding. ( mostly because of our severe wolf problem) Today I started Zoey, then Cookie just to confirm what I already knew. They smoked the track, fast but quiet. I dumped Burger and Rudy shortly after and what happens??? They take the track backwards?? Countless cats and they decide to start running lions backwards??? A first for everything. Burger being the smarter of the two figures it out in about 1oo yards Rudy on the other hand takes it 1/2 mile??? The Garmin is going crazy, the dogs are 3/4 of a mile out and circling along the river. I decide to leave cement head and go to the other dogs. Just then Cookie shows up. A 100 or more big game trees and this is a first for a 2 year old littermate of Burgers. I new something was up. I drove within 600 yards and walked in, Burger showed treed and I new what I was in for as I couldn't hear his 120 barks a minute. Zoey was still barking but came to me when I was within 50 yards of Burger. She promply took off after the cat which was waiting close by and stood her ground until the cat grabbed her as well.I ran to her rescue and kicked the cat off the dog. Zoey took off after the cat as soon as she was free. I called her and Cookie back as I wanted to check out Zoey's wounds.
I am going out in the morning to settle the score on way or another, I just wish I had another 4 dogs to let go, those dog killers can be mean.
I'll keep you in the loop if I connect tomorrow.

Hell ya, kill that S.O.B! it won't bring burger back, but make ya feel a little safer with the dogs in the woods. as for those wolves, you know what you need to do.

Doug
That's a tough deal, a guy gets attached to his hounds alot more than most people can imagine..
It's always the young lions in most cases that will do this, I don't know why but I think they deal with wolves more than we know and sometimes when you have a silent hound they are on the lion that they catch sleeping and it's too late.
When we run leopard all the strike dogs are ones that you can hear along way off just for that reason that the cat can hear them comming...
Be carefull, once a lion knows he can do it it's not good.

This is the best way to deal with the wolves, took this one in a trap today right where I lion hunt....
