Its lonely at the Top

Post by treed »

Have any of you ever given any thought about where you are in your hunting career??? Are you making headway??? Are you close to having that pack of hounds that legends are are made of.. 8) ...I think Im there fellas...
I was unloading my mule yesterday and this thought came to my head..." I think you made it Coop"...." I think you have topped out in the Lion and Bear hunting world"....
I had to take a seat and ponder this thought for awhile...After a minute or so, I realized I was right.

I saddled up my mule and dropped the tail gate.I just stood back and watched 6 of the best dogs in the hound world jump out of the truck...I got a little choked up watching them run around and sniff the area...As I started down the trail,I kind of felt sorry for the animals that might cross the paths of this pack of dogs...I mean skunks, chipmunks, squirrels, a slow bird, they were dead meat....Deer,Elk, Javelina trembled when my tailgate dropped....I kind of straightened out my hat as I rode on down the trail...People have asked me .."How do you do it Coop, how do you stay on top like you do"???...I dont know what to tell them..I mean I cant teach them this stuff..You either have it or you dont...My phone rings constantly begging for my services...Guides,Outfitters all over the US calling asking the same thing..."Coop, can you come hunt for us".!!!!!..I had to get a secretary to take my calls...Ive been doing so good I had to give up my own guide business..

I am making so much money from these guys its stupid...All they want me to do is to hunt there area one day before they come in.Im like a good luck charm to them or something...Whenever I hunt before them, there dogs never trash ever...I have traveled all over the US with the same result...Its like all the trash game leaves when my dogs come in ...Its mind boggleing...

As I rode my mule to the top of the rim, I could hear my dogs trailing down below...We werent even a half a mile from the truck, and my dogs already had a lion on the run...They must have hit a herd of lions, because they were scattered all over that canyon..My heart swelled up in my chest as I listened to the dogs work....If my phone had not been ringing so much, I would have enjoyed it a lot more...

Just in case you guys have a lot of money...I ll be taking a few hounds for training this year...Just call my secretary and she will set it up...Good luck to ya Coop

These storys make my eyes water, we have so much in common!

I was hot on the trail of a B&C pine martin the other day, I couldnt believe he had the audacity to cross minutes before we roaded by.
It was a great big tom marten, I usually dont run them but I felt the dream team was up to the challenge, their tails were tucked but they werent trembling too bad, they were still standing at least so clearly, were ready to go.
After I chased them around the truck 4 times with a cattle prod to get them going, they finally got lined out.
Long story shorter, it only took my champs a quick 12 hours to cold trail him to the jump, however he must have bayed up, the commotion was deafening even from 12 miles away.
They were on a muddy SE slope so I got out my swarovski spotter and what I saw impressed me 3 hounds barking at each others anus' so to not make eye contact with the beast and make him run again.
Then, things started happening a bit out of the norm.
The reflection of the spotter lens must have alarmed him for he knew back up was near, he was in harms way, after all, his coat is prime this time of year.
The 1 1/4" skulled B&C marten suddenly creased down the center in anger and that big tom marten, he charged!
Instantly, the dogs started running in reverse but facing the marten, in fear he'd mount them and make them his bitch, one at a time.
They quickly went out of sight, down to the river.
It was quiet, I was fearing for the lives of my dream team, I could hardly contain my emotions, that was it, I knew it, my dream team had met their match.

But wait!
The astro, it beeped... treed ! Oh god I love that sound, usually it means they've simply stopped chasing deer to lick their sack or cleanse their vagina but today was going to be it, I just knew it.

I was in celebratory mode, The dream team had overwhelmed their savage quarry and forced him to climb.
In excitement, I started the walk in, I ate a neat looking mushroom on the way to calm my nerves, man I was excited, the world was mine if I wanted it, life was perfect and I just had to crest the hill to see our quarry.
On the way in I saw monuments, rocks carved that looked like Ike, LT and other greats that have walked the earth.
Was I, was I really amongst the greats !?
I was looking forward to using my new slingshot I had some crackhead steal from walmart for a half gram.

I need to be honest here, a small part of me had doubt, but I remembered, the astro never lies you know, everything would be how I hoped and imagined. Yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It took a minute to comprehend what was happening, I was sweating, not sure why, it was minus 3.
The hissing was coming from the ground and the tree barking from above!?
It must have been the unfamiliar mushroom I thought, so I sat and gathered my senses.
The grass, the grass felt so "neat" in my hands. Why is there grass on the snow ?
Anyways I was rested and moved in the final 40 yards, spooking a herd of brontosauruses on the way.
I was livid, stupid lying p.o.s garmin! Yeah they were treed alright they were in the damn tree, I never saw that (beep) icon on the Astro before.. nice job steve white.
Obviously another 220 that shit the bed.
Suddenly, my hounds got spooked, they saw the tritronics dangling from its strap by my side, they jumped tree as soon as I made eye contact with them and they tucked tail and ran for the truck.
The pine marten growled at me, lifted his leg, marked his territory on my leg and scurryed off.
And that was that, back to reality.
