Horse back hunt

Post by STUNTMAN »

Had a nice little Horse back Hunt today. Weather was crappy but we chased one into a rock hole and couldnt get him and gave him a pass, but had a ton of fun riding the Paso's. Take care Stunt.

I like the way those horse's "ground tie". If I dropped the rein's like that with my mule, I'd be walkin back to the truck.

Stuntman looks like a load of fun. How long do those long dogs hold up behind horses? I though about doing that but i thought that the dogs would be to tired to chase.

Thats good stuff and sure enough a fun way to do it... Have you tried using a predator call? If you get one of those remote calls soon the stags learn that when it starts going they start looking for coyotes..

Brett not yet. But Uphill has called them in and slipped the Stags. I remember from years ago seeing your pics of Stags and Horses. Been thinking about it ever since.

I need to figure out how to get videos on the here.. I have some pretty good video..

One of the biggest problems I ever had was jumping jack rabbits.. I liked to run them but if I got in an area where there were too many the hounds would be wore out before we got to run a coyote. I never tried to break them off of jackrabbits not sure how that would work with those kind of hounds, might ruin them? Do you have any problems with the Jacks?

Old Theodore Roosevelt himself would have been damn thankful to be out there on a good horse chase, running down a prairie wolf with some good hounds and great steeds. He fancied horse and hounds. A day in the field was better than a day in the office. In the day, stags and Grey hounds were the dog to be called upon. They hunted with two sets of hounds, a morning set and afternoon. If you were so brave you could do it John Abernethy style and catch them alive by pining them down after the dogs and his stealthy horse back riding ran them to a stand still. He also caught Grey wolves in the same fashion. I think I would start on Chihuahua and work my way up, but that's the yellow running up my back. Great old photo's and nice work with those sight hounds.

Sourdough, its really not that much fun to handle a live coyote. I get to do it on a regular basis and you would be amazed at the quickness they have to strike. When the dogs have a coyote it is a real challenge to handle them because the dogs have the coyote by the front end of it, it is the only end they can handle without getting hurt. hard to handle a coyote with 2 or 3 dogs attached to the head but it can be done. I would recomend letting the dogs do the work and have the scars to back that up. last I was bit was yesterday and the yote came after me from 30 feet quicker than I could get my hand out he had me. Upside is they let go as quick as they bite(normally)
