Re: traps in ca
Your best bet is to make your own. The Duke HD traps are good and hold up but most of the ones they sell in feed stores are junk. They can be made into good traps but take some work. There are also many guys that make traps for a living and make some really good traps the bad thing is shipping to get them out here is crazy. The Trapping Convention in John Day Or. this summer is your best bet if you want to buy some of these really well made traps and save on shipping. You also might want to check out the Trapperman site there is always guys selling stuff on there.

Mercer Lawning will be up at that Convention in John Day Or. in June. If you cant make it up there maybe you could set up something with him to meet him on the way up to get some from him to save a little on shipping. I can tell you shipping is a killer on these traps. Many times it runs as much to get the trap shipped as it cost for the trap.

That is only true if you are buying just 1 cage trap. Mercer does clustering of cages also and if you get a cluster of 4-5, the shipping doesn't get much higher. 4 cages costs about $70 to ship but the doors are taken off for ease of shipping. You just hog-ring the door back on after you get them and you're ready to go.
Mercer makes a nice cage and his cam-lock set up it good. He swears by shorter and narrower cages than I use but who can argue with success? He puts up a good amount of fur each year.
