Terrier crosses

Post by TonyLee »

Just curious if anybody runs any terriers crossed with hound.. Jagds and patterdales expecially but even jacks. Just something been on my mind lately I had a jagd and cur cross that was a awesome little dog years ago. pictures would be great too. I ain't planning on making any crosses just curious. But I think the right cross could really be good in certain situations.

Just had a litter of Welsh Terrier/Beagle pups (Weagles). Both parents hunt. I'd bet they have a lot of GO in them.

Sounds like a interesting cross. Would like to hear more about it. Bout how big of a dog was it and which parent was the jagd? How did it work like a hound or with less nose? All that good stuff.

Cobalt,

We used to cross mtn. Feist into our beagles a little to add some frit and make a lil better jump dogs. What you planning to run with them. How's that welsh terrier work and what you run him on?

I hunt this dog on coon, rabbit, rockchuck, gophers and she's been on a couple bear. she is not quite the aggressive dog as my male welshes. They are more warriorlike, although my female is much better at going to ground. The beagle I bred her is a super rabbit dog and he also will tree a coon or cat. I'm not sure if I will keep any, but if I did, I would try them at everything I can to see what their strong points are.

Good to hear somebody working some welsh terriers kinda figuured they were just show dogs anymore. I had guy few years back try to give me a beagle that would tree like a mad man and was a serious sq dog. I kick myself in the hind end everytime I think bout that sure wish I would have got him. I would like too see some pictures of your welsh if you could post em and the pups be nice too. About how big are your welsh?

I tried to get some pics up but my tinypic acct is giving me problems. I think there is some truth to the showdog rationale, but even though I am no terrier expert, I think the line that my males are out of are pretty tough. They track, trail, tree and fight game as good as anything I've seen and are good around other dogs and people.

Good lookiing dogs those look like they got some drive too. How are they on tree was it hard to get them to tree or they take to it natural. I wouldn't mind giving one a try if I could get one from working lines..

One of my males is a good tree dog. I think he just learned real quick with the hounds and is a bang up tree dog. I don't do a lot of tree game hunting with them or I think they'd be better. If I could get a pup out of the cross I hooked into, I would recommend one of them for sure, but not knowing exactly where they come from would be chancy. I've been around a lot of jadg terriers and these weshies I have are better for me because they are more family oriented with plenty of hunt.

They sound interestiing. I wouldn't mind trying to get a pup if you ever raise any off them. Wouldn't mind seeing what them cross bred pups turn out looking like too. Be interesting seeing how they work

With a good hound, you dont need to cross.

When you do, you get Less nose and less grit.

Just require more of your hound breedings, or from breeders.

Jagds are great little dogs on their own and can hunt boar more safely than larger dogs,
From all accounts-most Jagds are over the top drivey.

I don't run hounds anymore. I hunt 3 patterdales and a mtn feist. I can go out and get a good hound tonight if I wanted a hound. Just like to be a little dfferent. Follks may catch more game wth puure hounds and I'll be first to tell you that I did. But I will also be first to say I sure have a lot more fun out of my little dogs. Pllus you should see the looks I get from the guys I use to run hounds with when they see some of the coons me and the little dogs catch.

Liike I said I ain't making a cross would I take one from a litter on the ground already you bet ya if it came from game catching parents. F I would rather have a pure jagd. I had a female sevral years back was a game getting litlle dog also had a pup out of her and a mtn cur (I didn't do the cross bought pup and gyp off a guy). The pure one I had was never taught any manners and was 6 when I got her she was for sure over the top driivey.. the cross was more melllow wth a better attitude. I sure would like to try another one I thnk the older gyp would have been a real dog had she been taught some manners. But with her being bascally let to do what she wanted for 6 years made her a little nutty. I am just curious what everyone elses experiences are.
Thanks guys for the replies.

Boarhunter1,
If anythng I said came out smart it wasn't meant that way at all. I just like being the odd man ouut these days. I ran registered walker dogs out of some high class dogs for years. I am sure I will go back to them one of these years but rght now I am enjoying somethng a little different.

if you don't mind the cost of importing, britain & ireland are still loaded w/ great terriers expecially breeds that are all show & no go in the USA. welsh, lakeland, border, even sealyham & bedlington (the show dogs look like lambs), good working blood from all can be had 12-16# dogs that can go down a hole & kill a 12-16# red fox.

Why import?
One can get a game Patt or Jagd right here in the states.
