does anybody ride a mustang looking for thougts on them

Mustangs were all my dad and grand dad rode as kids. We have a lot of old pictures of mustang ponies with kids all over them. I decided to get a few so I bought 3 and broke them all. I ended up with 1 that I really liked so I sold the other two. I kept that little horse for a long time and rode him everywhere. He never got very tall but was real stout and packed me through some really rough terrain and really had a lot of bottom to him. He wasn't real fast but would go all day. I always shoe a horse but I decided to not shoe him and he never took a lame step on me. He was real good with the dogs too. He was an extremely easy keeper and always kept weight on well. Overall he turned out to be a really nice little pony and real tough. I know some guys that will buy a few and they pay real close attention to the herds that they get their horses from and say they have pretty good success with the horses they get out of those particular herds. For lion hunting I cant think of a better mount than a seasoned mustang pony or a mule and know a few guys who have some nice little mustangs. Some guys say that a mustang is stupid and that they are a pain in the butt to train which can be true in some cases just due to the fact that certain traits obviously aren't bred for in them horses and you get what you get, however if you have had some good luck with some horses out of a particular herd then there usually is some consistency there. One of the horses that I bought was the sale topper and he was a little older horse but had decent conformation for a mustang. He was real tough to break and really a challenge. If I didnt ride him every day or every other day I had to start all over again. I sold this horse to a real good hand and he rode him quite a bit and he could never keep him broke. My advice would be to get a young colt or yearling and to do your home work on what herd others have gotten good horses from.

Ive got one now.she has great feet.i havent had to shoe her yet. if i was planning a weeklong trek id get her shoed. but for 1 or 2 days on the weekends. she hardly chips them down to where there as short as they oughtta be.shes fat as a hog right now on pasture. havent had to feed hay yet since theres no snow...she would be a pretty nice horse if id ride her more. but she's doing alright for as much (or little) as i ride her.

If you were to find a well broke mustang that has been trained by a person who "knows" mustangs you could end up with a decent enough mount, depending on what you wanted to do with it. Mt. riding is probably where they do the best. Square built, short coupled tough little horses as a general rule. Gotta keep an eye open for physical faults, the myth is they are fine specimens, but a good many of them are not put together as good as the hype would suggest.

I would steer plumb clear of thinking about breaking/training one yourself unless you know (not think you know) but know how to gentle/train a horse. Most mustangs require very thorough thoughtful training. They don't give much up for free just because you have "good intentions".

You gotta be pretty darn tough to ride one for long distance as they are not the smoothest mount in the barn.

My opinion is if your lookin for just a good dependable mt. horse there are a LOT of well bred more domestic type horses available these days at dang decent prices.

I have a 6 year old gelding...mustang you can have if you will come and get him soon. He was broke but hasnt been ridden lately. There are people dropping horses off all over the place around here. I dont believe he is a kids horse from what little i have been around him but if you put a little time into him he will probably be fine. Give me a call if your interested.

Never had any that we rode but had about 12 between the family that we packed with and they were some good ones. toughest pack horses I've been around.

Not me brother! They're ears are too short!!!!!!! I've sure seen some good ones though.
