NMDG&F
April 5th NMDG&F are having a meeting for proposals on the lion and bear hunting in NM. http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/publica ... shadv.html
They are talking about a year round lion season and two lion tags per hunter. Some ideas are good some not so much. I hope some folks are able to make it to the meeting to push for year round lion season.

Re: NMDG&F
Joe, my area went to year round unlimited quota with 2 tag per hunter 2 years ago and now the lion numbers are down considerably. It is a bad deal trust me. I hunted the quota areas before they closed and were finding cats in there frequently. My area here I hunt the same place a few times a week and have found 2 lion tracks since Jan 1. Something to think about when going to the year round no quota double tag option.
I like my men like I like my mountains...... Rugged, challenging, and WILD!!!

Re: NMDG&F
My understanding is that the quota system will remain in affect. In the areas that are not known for having snow, nothing will change in harvest numbers. In the areas where snow is relied on, things won't change enough to impact the quota system. For those of us who like it warm and dry, WAX ON!!!

Re: NMDG&F
I agree Benny, the numbers won't change. Outfitters that are snow runners have enough clients usually to be able to kill any harvestable lion they get after even if they have to hold it or surround it for several days to round up a client. ( oh i forgot they don't do that anymore). but in areas where little or no snow stays on the ground it won't make much impact but it will allow those that maintain a pack of dogs for free cast bare ground hunting to keep those dogs sharp and in shape and enjoy their sport and protect their livestock with dogs that are actually able to catch something and not soft from laying around for months with no real hunting.
I have changed my postion somewhat over the years due to the lack of any real managment plan from state. As i have stated before their is no true biological data to support how they set quotas. Oh they may have a matrix that was usued in some secluded isolated or even foriegn study but it is smoke and mirrors.
Thing's wouldn't change much if they de-listed the cougar in this state and it went back to being a predator in status rather than big game. Texas has remained this way and you don't see folks selling the farm to go take a lion hunt in Texas. and yes Texas has a lot of lions but sunny Texas seldom gets snow so it may be a little harder to get one, so you see Texas sportsmen cashing in their stocks to send a booking check to an Outfitter in some good snow country to make sure they get a lion for the trophy room.
I seriously doubt the forest guardians, peta, or sierra kooks will allow this to happen but the conditions and weather are lovely today and it sure would be nice to saddle up turn the hounds loose and make a circle.
ahhh! wishful thinking. LOL!

I agree with Mike and Benny. The dry conditions will keep most lions safe. Mike is dang sure right, while Texas has a good lion population, especially in the Trans-Pecos and Big Bend areas, not many outfitters making a living hunting lion out there.
I also agree that it is nice to be able to work your dogs year round. Hunting a few days during a cool spell or following a rain is nice to keep the rust off your pack.
Adios,
Gary

Im all about the year round season! Especially since the quota will stay the same. I was really wanting to go to this meeting and help push for it but I thought it was Saturday instead of today. If anyone goes I hope they let us know how it goes.

Re: NMDG&F
Year round would be just fine ... matter of fact if they shut it down Nov through Jan it wouldn't hurt my feelings any. When it snows down here it usually just makes me and the hounds look foolish..

JOE,
WENT TO THE MEETING IN GALLUP THIS MORNING, THE ONLY GUYS THERE WAS ME, MIKE ROOT, A GUY FROM THE PHILMOUNT, A GUY FROM THE UU BAR, A GUY FROM THE BOW HUNTERS ASSOC., AND SOME GUY FROM WILDLIFE FEDERATON. NO ONE FROM THE OTHER SIDE. WE ALL SUPPORTED THE DEPT'S PROPOSALS, DOING AWAY WITH DEPT'S DEP. BEAR AND ROAD KILLS OFF OF HARVEST LIMITS, GOIN TO YEAR ROUND SEASONS FOR LIONS AND 2 TAGS, I'VE KIND OF GOT MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THIS BUT LIKE YOU SAID THERE IS STILL A HARVEST LIMIT SO I THINK I SEE WERE THE DEPT IS WANTING TO TAKE THIS. HAVING SAID THAT YOU PROBABLY WILL NOT BELIEVE THE NEXT PART. AFTER WE ALL SAID WHAT WE HAD TO SAY, COMMISSIONER SALOPEK WENT ON RECORD TO SAY THAT HE IS A BOW HUNTER AND THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE MONTH OF SEPT RETURNED TO HOUNDSMEN SO THEY CAN RUN AND HUNT BEARS WITH DOGS HE COULD NOT SEE WHAT IT WOULD HARM. I COULD NOT BELEIVE WHAT I WAS HEARING. THEN WE BROKE FOR A BREAK. I WENT UP TO HIM TO THANK HIM FOR THAT RECOMMENDATION TO THE DEPT, AND THE GUY FROM THE BOW HUNTER ASSOC SAID THAT HE WOULD GO ALONG WITH THAT IDEA. WHAT A DEAL. I THINK ALL OF US THAT LIKE THE IDEA SHOULD EMAIL DICK SALOPEK AND COMMEND HIM FOR THAT STATEMENT. THAT WOULD BE ALRIGHT WITH ME. THE OTHER THING WE ALL NEED TO DO IS EMAIL THE OTHER COMMISSIONERS AND LET THEM KNOW WHAT YOU THINK, PRO OR CON . RON

Re: NMDG&F
If they are going to do the vote here in Ruidoso you can bet your ass the hippies will be there in full force. There are probably enough tree huggers here to win against sportsman here who will show up to vote. We're gonna need lots of outside votes. We also need to spread the word to houndsmen and hunters around the state to come vote. Is there any way for people from other parts of the state to vote without coming to Ruidoso? I have an extra room and some couch space if needed.
