Solving dog barking on/in box

Post by Oregon.Hunter »

Got a 10 month old walker female who comes outta great cat lines. Only hunted her towards the end of last season. She rigging everything with hair on it. She seen 2 cats and 7-8coons is All. I like to take the dogs for a run at least twice a week. For exercise. My problem is shes barking all te time on or in the box. I've toned her and she quits for 5 min or so and then fires back up. This shit has to stop. She has not been broke off trash. I'd like to wait a bit longer. She rigged every trainer I've thrown at her and really believe she's doing good. Trees like a champ and is super fast. She's a little timid with electricity and I don't want to blast her to we're she's quits striking. I really have high hopes for this pup. Something needs to change. Folks if you can help me with ideas please do. She's not babbly or anything like that. She runs hard and opens just right IMO

One of the best rig dogs I have ever seen barked nonstop on the box when it was 8 months old I mean nonstop now at 3 that dog is a all around excellent cat dog. One thing I'd be sure of is never shock a dog on the box could potentially ruin a dog from ever rigging. Maybe just Hollar at him a bit JMO. Good luck

I think I would try a small jerk cord. If the dog is on top you could jerk it off balance a bit when you talk to him. Just don't take the ditch :P

back in the days before box dogs a lot of natural strike dogs were ruined as we would not put up with a dog barking on or in the box. then we evolved into better dog men and realized the wonders of the box dog. now every one wants a box dog lol. sounds like you may have one. let her mature and keep her in the game. when she strikes a few tracks and trees them, then start to clamp down on the unwanted barking. as she matures she should slowdown and you should be able too tell when she is striking or just excited. hang in there and don't brake her spirit as it is a fine line your working with. jmo
no mater if you think you can or you think you cant,, you are probably rite.

Road the hair off her before you put her on the box That helps ,sometimes .I never did break my old McKenzie River Hunter from it.She sounds hyper ,but also sounds like a keeper!

the Jerk cord ker man mentioned is a good method for box or hood. Like Old dog wrote a lot of good strike dogs get ruined at a young age for making too much noise up there. and you'll wear the door hinges off your pick-up getting out to swat her with your cap..

I would never shock a dog in the or on the box. tone and a yell will usually get the results I need.
I let my pups strike what ever they want , they only get down when the what I call Broke dog strikes, they figure it out quick enough

Teach your pup to be quiet while NOT in a hunting situation.Take her to town with you,to work whatever you can to keep her in the box and travelling.Focus on keeping her quiet when there is nothing around to strike at all.
She needs to understand what you want from her before you put her in the position of having to decide on her own.
Work on the fur after.
