Let me clear something up I have hunted with A LOT of running dogs. They are not foreign to me. Like they were to you 2 years ago.

Let me be clear. The one that is here will take a bullet as quick as anything else that don't hold its part of the bargain. I'm just not as narrow minded as some that have said lion can't be rigged. I'm always looking for something better or that can do more. And don't give a chit what anyone says the tree dogs don't hold a candle in toughness to the running dogs.

I don't have a dog in this fight, as I have never had an inclination to hunt cats (have treed a few) But I always enjoy learning... But I can tell you that your statement isn't true. This isn't what I think, this is what I know. I live and hunt in the midde of Running dog country, and I may be just a lowly bear hunter, but I tell you what, it may not be extremely common, but there are treedogs that aren't only as tough, but tougher than running dogs. I've found some of the most bragged about dogs have been some of the least tough.

Cassandra I have seen the same. Not as a freak accident but on a consistent basis. The people that talk the loudest often are saying the least. Running dogs are dang sure no different...

Willie, I like this topic. Just thought it was about running dogs and crosses[ not about comparing to anything else]. Robin made a good point about true catdog being rare in any breed. But since we are debating, heres some things to consider. Hard to deny if you went out today, started from scratch ordered some reg. tree hounds in any a breed[some worse/better than others] your not gonna find splayed feet, thin hair, conformation suited for coon hunting, lots of voice [on or off track] some that won't LOCATE some that over locate[tree happy] and trailers [ not running a track the way it should be]. Then you could go to the running dog guys that have pen bred hounds, run into; wired up, hot nosed, tight mouthed, no to poor locators. Or you could go to guys like the clays or the others that have running dogs who have the qualities we are looking for with maybe having to make good crosses to insure solid locate ability in our[westcoast tall timber] country. Sonny and Jesse Turner have been doing this very thing for 40-50 years[??longer] with tremendous success! Tom Barnes has had some fine reg.walkers and walker/running dog crosses. He and the Turners say the same thing, find us some reg. tree hounds that will suit us-- have money will buy. They both [along with many others] have crosses that are producing results I won't even bother sharing to spare myself being called a liar or just not knowing. To me proof is in the pudding.

Tim,

Robin made the most sense of everyone. And he is one that gets his chain jerked pretty regular.
No matter though some will always open their mouth and drool stupid. Good hearing ya.

I will say this as a whole, yes, Running dogs tend to be tougher than any other breed. But I have seen a LOT that were FAR from that also. I have seen some very unlikely dogs be extemely tough. There are other breeders that breed for brains, speed, endurance and heart. Like someone said, good dogs are a reflection of good breeders and good houndsmen.

I have experience with dogs ( more than one) directly out of the turners breeding. Some of kemp and grimmett stuff also Your not telling me anything I have not seen Tim. All I am saying is there is more than them that do a very good job at producing better hounds. In some cases tougher, more heart, brains etc... Not in all cases but you cant look for a gold mine in a sewer pond..

oneguy828: I am always looking for a better dog. How many years have you been at this game? What do you hunt bear, lion or bobcats? Name a few of the people that have been breeding these tougher dogs for longer. I would love to try them. Dewey

Dewey, I haven't been at this game for long I made that clear. I guess people have to tell you things twice. I have been hunting for 3 years. I hunt bobcats and bears Dewey. I never stated in in any of my posts that I know people that have been doing it longer, I just said producing good hounds. I could see how your assumptive attitude has lead you down the road your going. The dogs I hunt come directly out of Brett Williams Max dog I am not saying there better by any means but more consistent I can say with a lot of faith. That's solely on my experience. which is very limited. Like I stated more than once... I'll remember to speak more clearly for you Dewey...
