anyone use an SUV to hunt?

Postby blohmeier » Sun Jul 13, 2014 10:04 pm

Was wondering if anyone had any good setups for dogs using an SUV instead of pickup. Had to sell me Tacoma to buy a new work truck so now I am trying to figure out a way to utilize my 85 4 runner. I only have two dogs so don't need much room. Any suggestions or pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brandon

Are you trying to rig them or just for transport? If just for trnasport make a divider or get a large dog crate for them. If you rig I don't see why you couldn't make some sort of custom divider between the front and back seats to keep the dogs from slobbering on you. Then you could just roll the back windows down. Just get ready for the mess from hair, etc. Reminds me of when my truck got stolen and I used a 4 door sedan for a little while before I bought a truck again. It worked but boy did that car stink.

Thanks for the response, I should have been more specific. I would like to find a way to rig them. I was thinking about trying to build some kind of box off the back of the 4 runner but just rolling down the back window sounds a lot easier. I am fairly new to the hounds (mainly a bird dog guy) so I wasn't sure how that would work with them getting scent hanging out the back. Definitely worth a drive up to the hills though to try it out before I build something.

Here is my new hunting SUV. I chopped a 96 4runner. Works great and has hour doors perfect for guiding.

Joe, that looks like the ideal set up, now if only I can figure out how to do that with my fiberglass top. Thanks for posting all the pictures.

I hunt out of a 3rd gen 4runner. Hood rug and roof rack to rig and when not hunting hood rug comes right off. Custom box takes place of back seat area and behind 70x40" 2 feet of it is lockable storage works great I usually sleep on my box when hunting can send you some pics if interested also make sure your box is sealed at least the bottom 4" or so and keep some shavings in there to contain any dog piss haha if you don't it will run everywhere. Also line-x ing the interior made cleanup easier just hose it out. Hope I could of been some help
