How much hunting?
How many days a month does a guy have to hunt hounds to justify owning them.
Re: How much hunting?
I hunt mine 20 days a month.
Once i move this summer i will be running them everyday.

I personally don't think it takes more than a certain number of days to justify having hounds. For me I look at a number of things and the biggest thing is what I get out of it, when I'm out with my dogs it's like hitting a reset button so I can stay sain. I also look at if my dogs are happy if I had a dog that needed more to be happy I would probably move them along to someplace better for them. I have been lucky my dogs are pretty chill so I haven't had that issue. The next thing is having realistic expectations. I don't get to hunt as much as I would like too so I don't expect to have a kennel full of rockstars. I understand that they are not going to be perfect. I guess what I'm saying is if it's something you love to do then that's enough for me to justify it.
Re: How much hunting?
To me personally its about time spent with the dogs, I try to get my dogs off there chains a couple times during the work week for at least a 30 minute free cast run around the 14 acres I live on with the garmin in my hand to tone dogs when needed and maybe a dog or two on a lead. Living along the snake river bottom 3 miles south of grand teton park there is allways coyote/ fox/coon/house cats/dogs/moose/elk/white tail/mule deer/and once or twice a year a spring /late summer or fall bear on or around the place I caretake, or I just leash them and they take me for a walk down the road, weekends I like to try and road the dogs any where from 5 to 15 miles. Thats just what I do to justify to my self for owning my dogs and then from November to March 31 I do my best to hunt 2 days a week. I like to get some bear hunting in as well. And of course there are sometimes they might be chained for 10 days straight cause Im not home. I hunt with guys that also think Im over the top on messing around with my dogs but i enjoy the exercise myself. When your feeling like your not hunting them enough spend some time like this or half this time, what ever and they will be some happy campers waiting for you to take em huntin, a little bit of this goes a long ways, plus when you do get em out they will handle nicely.

I don't think its about hunting them so many days a month but I know that dogs will really get right once you get them in hard runnin shape which most people have never experienced nor will they ever. Until you see what I'm talkin bout you really cant understand.

No need to justify owning them. Just make sure they get enough exercise to keep em happy

Well our dogs get in hard running shape after about a month or so of hittin hard. You can get em real tough in the summer months say about June when the corn gets up here running them at night on coyotes. The first couple weeks they will look like hell cuz they run themselves pretty ragged but after that they start to toughen up and get right. Of course they will still look pretty rough cuz of factors but they will act bubbly and full of energy. In the winter you can get em tough too but you cant ride around all day with them in the box. You gotta send em often and try to get as many races a day out of your dogs so that's why I really like to hunt alone when I am running hounds.

Dan, I know what you mean by hard running shape. Its that same with bear in Idaho, once the dogs get to that point they catch every bear I put them on. I believe that ties into how often a guy should be hunting. The dogs should stay in good shape for whatever season they are hunting. With that being said, owning good hounds is a huge commitment. It takes several days a week to maintain them, not just weekends. I like to say, "Go big or go home!" Thats how owning hounds should be looked at.

That's exactly what I'm talkin bout. I didn't wanna say it cuz folks wouldn't hardly believe it but when they get in that kinda shape they just don't miss.

Every good coon dog I ever made I pretty much truly made em in the summer. I assume you can run em in the summer in Indiana too. Don't believe that shit that they need coons shot out to em. Nothin could be further from the truth. Snap em up. Lead em a few hundred yards from the tree and send em on. Or if you are just patch huntin load em up and run to another spot.
I need to edit this cuz its not really true. I didn't "make them in the summer". I made them in both seasons but summer months is a really good time to run young dogs and let them learn. It gets real tough here in the late winter months and young dogs just cant handle the trackin conditions all the well. A good cool summer night can teach a young dog a lot of stuff.

It took me about 30 seconds to google your hunting laws. You have a "LEGAL" pursuit season(which in Indiana is call Dog Running)from Feb. 1-Oct. 25. Go get em. Tree em up. Leash the dog and walk away. Just make sure if you are gonna do this that you either lead your dog far enough away from the tree to cut em again or just move to another spot. You don't want to get a dog started heading back to the tree. That's a bad habit that is man made so if it happens its your fault no matter how old you are.
