pup question?
pup question?
How old do you all let pups get before you stick them out with the rest of the dogs at home? My last one was in the house a long time but I'm picking one up in a couple weeks and really don't want to keep it in longer than it needs to be. It will be about 6 weeks old when I get it. Thanks

Re: pup question?
Mine have the run of the property till they don't stay on the property usually anywhere from 3 to 6 months old but I also live at the end of road. If it is cold I have a dog door where they can go in and out of the house at will. At 6 weeks old a pup by itself will be scared and I think keeping it in the house would be a good idea for at least a couple of weeks, then have it follow you around while you feed the other dogs. You can probably tell how it interacts with the other dogs on when to keep her outside.
Re: pup question?
Sounds good thanks for the info, I've only had hounds a few years and my last pup is now about 3 1/2 and he was in the house until I told my wife last year that hunting with one dog was BS and went and got another one. The day I got that one he went out the door too. Thanks again

Re: pup question?
I wouldn't let a weaning age pup mingle with the older dogs.Wait until they're at least 4 or 5 mos old .You can keep them outside if they have a warm, dry place to sleep but letting them mix with the older dogs is very risky.

Agree with bludawg. You have love and trust to build with that new pup anyway, and A pup with mature dogs is a situation that I would only let happen under my strict chaperoning and that just for introductions of the hounds. A Pup needs to grow and mature a little so he can defend himself in the pecking order establishment that will eminently follow. JMO

Thanks for everyone's advice I appreciate it. I've been keeping her outside during the day in a small pen and kennel her up inside at night. Thanks again
