Lay up type coondog? Do you think getting a fast coondog over a foxhound cross is better? I was thinking of trying to get a foxhoumd treeing walker cross and then a black and tan to cold trail. Is that a good idea or no get something else?

At this time I only own two dogs, both were kenneled & hunted by my friend this past winter. I did make several hunts with him & all the dogs past fall. winter & spring. Friend gets the dogs out as much as possible in the summer for exercise. It is very hard to hunt here in the summer, fire season/s have been severe past several summers, most gates are locked & signs posted stated anyone caught on those lands will be charged with criminal trespass. News saying looks like the summers are going to continue with longer fire season. There was a time for years I hunted year around, and at one point had seven trained cat dogs. My advice to this young hunter is free & he can take it or leave it. Al

I know and have been known to preach the one pup rule. But the truth is there's times its just not possible. One dog bear or lion packs are rare. And if you insist on hunting one dog it tends to get rarer to your dismay.
And the single dog with the ability to shift gears on a desert bobcat is almost unknown in my experience. The thing about cat hunting is you have to actually be pretty good at it to catch enough to stay interested.
I have owned a few dogs that could be taken to Colorado or Kansas and catch cats solo. But they didn't do it here very often except for pop ups. And I admit to this day I run pairs of pups all the time. Yes they can cause more trouble. And generally play more for awhile. But two pups will leave the working dogs alone a little more. And it doesn't take long before they catch on.
Now if you only have yourself to train a dog you better stick to one and game you can handle together until he's pretty good at it alone. I love hunting dogs, but the idea of trying to single handedly train several pups doesn't bring visions of joy or relaxing hunts.
On coon in a good area I might be persuaded to do it. But anything else in anything rougher then a creek bottom and I'll pass .

I should restate my phrase by saying one pup rather than (dog) as in his first post he was wanting to get two pups one that could cold trail and one that could have jump speed to make climb. Two pups are trouble for inexperienced hunters. More than likely he would be setting himself up for failure. Andy

I am glad you made that clear, because I did not ever mean to advocate that he get a bunch of new pups, or even two of them.

All along I have been hoping to say that his coon dog he already has can be extremely useful in the cat hunting world. He only needs to add that ONE DOG, with catch magic.
