Running both bears and lions?
Just curious but you see these guys that run both lions and bears with their dogs especially the outfitters. Do they use separate dogs for bear and lions or the same dogs and the dogs just understand the change in the season means a change in game?
Re: Running both bears and lions?
In many places by the time lion season opens bears are hibernating. Some people use the same dogs but usually have one or 2 that favor either lions or bears. Not many states left that have lion and bear seasons with hounds. Idaho, Utah, NM, Az are all that comes to mind.

You forgot Iowa. Loloswald wrote:. Not many states left that have lion and bear seasons with hounds. Idaho, Utah, NM, Az are all that comes to mind.
Opened year round.
They figure they have about five of each.

Re: Running both bears and lions?
I am not an outfitter but I run both with the same dogs. Some dogs excell at certain things things better than then others but generally out of my 8 hounds my top 4 bear dogs are also my top 4 cat dogs. Ya sometimes when bear hunting they will trash on cats but I kill a very low percentage of what I tree, so any species of cat or bear is fair game for me. If I were an outfitter that could be a problem.
Re: Running both bears and lions?
I also run both bears and lions with the same dogs. Other than when free casting on mules, i bear hunt using the vehicle and rigging where lion hunting is open year-round here and I generally do it with free casting. During the Spring I can chase either one and sometimes will chase one one day and chase the other the next. Ultimately like was previously stated my best dogs are my best dogs regardless of species that We're chasing

I run lion, lynx and bear (as an outfitter) with the same dogs. Other then one or two dogs that don't like the real mean bears my best strike dogs are my best strike dogs regardless of species hunted.

The old dogs know what trees and what doesn't. They know what you reward them and what you scold them for.
