That statement is so TRUE Mark. Hard hunting doesn't always catch game as a lot of young bucks think. Smart hunting now that sure improves your odds. Andy

Don't matter what color the dogs or if they are "special" or not, but a bear is only gonna run as fast as what's chasing it !!
Re: Bluetick Bear Hounds
Ive seen some bears that weren't very good judges of distance then.

I know my dogs are on the slow side but it shouldn't matter if the bear is only going to run as fast as it has to. You kinda contradicted yourself blackberryboy

Blackcreek, has a point most times when a bear crosses a road dogs are inside of 100 yards. I image that would be the case on both slow or fast dogs. Fast gritty dogs will more apt pressure it climb sooner though.
Also if you are just starting you never really know if you have a good dog or not. You may think you have a very good dog then 10 years later you decide that your very good dog was in fact only average.
Yes hard hunting does not necessarily mean high success. However if you are young and have a job your only choice may be to hunt hard when you can, instead of having the luxury of waiting till conditions are good.

A bigger or older bear might run as fast as his pursue . However I've seen bears that must a figured Haley's comet was on em.
Most of our little bears our like that and it really is a running game. But then you get grumpy who has hounds all over him and he still doesn't consider doing anything he didn't wake up planning to do. It does seem to be more common for lighter bears in more marginal habitat like here to be world class athletes. Of course a hound really is more of a threat to a smaller bear.

Re: Bluetick Bear Hounds
I have read through all the post on this topic and all are real true. Here is what I have found to be true for me and I live to bear hunt and hunted around all color of hounds. I have run walkers most of my life and treed lots of bears and the statement about the Bears only run as fast as being pushed I found to be very true. But here is what I have found out before when i ran avrage speed dogs I still treed a lot of bear just took me a lot longer to tree them and with some help. And now that I have what I feel to be well above average speed dogs just tree the bear much faster with little to no help. The color don't seem to matter as said before there are different speeds in all breeds. But when bear hunting this is why you have more than one dog it may be a little slower but might be an awsome jump dog so it will most deffently have its place in your pack.
Re: Bluetick Bear Hounds
Good and bad in all of them. Fast and slow in all breeds from what I have seen over the years. That's 35 years in the woods with hounds. Around here blueticks , redbone , plott, black& tan have really good feet. The walker guys can't seem to hunt them as much cause there feet get really sore or even bleed.seen some that tear there pads clear off a lot of times. And old blueticks keep on ticking along. My heart tells me all redbone but my mind tells me all bluetick and from the looks of my kennel my mind is winning that battle. Blue dogs seem to have more heart and drive. But also seen b&t and plotts have the drive to. My blueticks come from hammer blood from years back just kept breeding to keep it going. Sure there is some smokey river and Von. In there blood also. Most come out all blue now days no tan on them. And there built really good not like the old blocky thick chested blueticks. The have really good speed also.

I believe that every breed has good bear dog's. In any breed if you find the one's that run to catch you will have a pack of bear dog's. I personally like to have a kennel that is multiple breeds..
