Hog hunting with cat dogs

Postby Bluedog88 » Mon Nov 13, 2017 5:28 pm

What do you think about using 2 we'll started bob cat dogs and dropping them on a pig track? Not may wild pigs around here but I have a few on my game camera. 2 year old bluetick and a 3 year old pit that keeps up with the bluetick and trees a lot harder.

Don't mess up good dogs on a hog find a dog that's not very good at running a cat or coon and show him a hog and turn him out at the feeder hogs are a lot easyer to run don't need as good of nose to run one and then when he bays walk in with a gun and be really quiet and shoot it

Whatever you decide to do I would NOT run that bulldog loose or you will be asking for a train wreck. I would just do what PWilson suggests.

Don't let anyone talk you out of it....let them dogs run. Lots of strategy would depend on terrain and size of hogs you are seeing. Bigger hogs or hard terrain, I would run the bluetick alone and either lead in the bulldog and catch it or just shoot the hog. Smaller hogs or easier terrain run the bulldog with them. If you can stay close they will be fine!

Dont be fooled, Old Wiley woods hogs can be smart and by no means an easy target. The ones that are hunted hard are savvy and hogs are one of the most intelligent animals out there!

Good luck and Happy hunting

Don't have much to add but the title did catch my eye rather quickly because I get ribbed all the time because of what the title states, I'm doing exactly that, I crossed a clay bred running walker over my best two cur gyps, unless an individual has pursued wild hogs in different areas and different types of terrain then they will never understand how much different hogs are in different areas and regions, they literally cover from one end of the spectrum to the other and are the only game animal on the planet who are successfully caught with dogs of hundreds of different styles, there isn't a right or wrong way but rather than what works, only advice I would give is to hold the bulldog back and try the bay and then catch method first, if not with inexperienced dogs and handlers things can get real western and out of control real fast, only way to find out is to out the hide to the hair, kiss'em on the head and tell them you will see them when you get there and give it a shot....

Benji and his first hog and the fourth time he ever saw one, struck and bayed him in his bed at 3am....
Here's proof you can, lol... He'll be two the end of next month...

Putting GOOD varmint dogs intentionally onto pigs. That is a big no for me.
Infrequently I have a young dog or two decide to bay a pig, but I assure you they don't want to get after another when I get ahold of them.
I get pretty serious with them about trash like deer and coyotes, but with pigs all hell rains down upon them. I put too much work into my dogs to have them messing with or get messed up by a pig.
