south dakota bobcat hunting

Post by vann0060 »

I am going to visit my sister in Rapid. Wondering if it was worth bringing a hound and trying to run cats a couple of days. good population? lots of pressure? any input would be great.

I was wondering if any one of you hills guys would like to trade a day of badland bobcat hunting for a hills hunt. I would like to try to run a bob in the hills once. But don't have access or know the right spots. Do have alot of spots down here but no snow right now though.

good luck, its tough to find tracks, way too many lions, most of us would rather come out there anyway, but theres folks like Ross and Chris that always seam to find at least one track, but some of us were born tall and handsome and some were born short and lucky, lol,my bigest problem is my trashy lot will always take a hot lion over a cold bob so hills hunting tends to be a waste of time for me,you put down on a bob and get to the tree and have to sneak out like a frigen outlaw, cause the tail was too long ,i aint screamin at my dogs for treeing lion, so i just hunt were there is far less lions like out on the prairies, a cool place too go is up too Slim Butes north of Newell, and like always, willing to drive down and run bobs just say when

I was wondering about the Slim Buttes also have you ever hunted the Cave Hills up around Camp Crook. We just need a little snow down here in the badlands and it sounds like there's plenty up there.

what snow that there is left up in Harding County is so hard you have a tough time finding a track. The trappers have hit the bobcats so hard up in this area the last 3 or 4 years, it's getting tough to find one on good snow even.

van0060, Right know the conditions are not real great. I still go out but thats because I'm not all that bright. The bobcat numbers are not real high in the black hills. Too many trappers and too many mountain lions. Right know the areas with a few cats are going to be tough to run. Where there is snow its deep and where there isn't snow its rugged. The cats seem to go straight to these areas and won't leave. But what the hell, give it a try. I manage to get lucky and catch one once in awhile. Ross

Well sounds like what they do out here in the badlands if the cats are within a mile of the rough stuff it will be a dead run past cottonwood trees pine trees around ceder trees maybe even across open spaces till they get to the badlands. If you get lucky enough once in awhile they will tree but the dogs are darn near pulling fur first. So now I don't know if I want to trade hunts, always welcome to come along down here ,but from the way it sounds I can drive 20min and hike 10miles vs from what ya all are saying driving 1 1/2 hours and hiking 10miles. Down here more than 50% of the time your going to cut a track if ya have snow!!! that is not saying 50% of the time ya even see the cat. but ya might get a coon or two. The positive side to this is I'm getting my excersise and actually enjoying it. Darn atticting sport.

Ryan, they have been seeing a big bobcat tom over at Mike's. You might check along your dad's place where he borders. It sounds like he was seen in that area several times.

I can probably get you out sometime. I don't get out as much as I use to but I'm sure we can get your dog a cat to smell sometime this winter.
