Re: I have been thinking of starting to run yotes
I don't think it's legal in Idaho
Re: I have been thinking of starting to run yotes
just read through the regs and it's not covered. it specifies certain biggame animals can be hunted & then says dogs may not be used to hunt any other big game. it never says coyote or jack rabbit, which is good, as i know a few guys that take coyote regularly w/ sighthounds & have been doing it for YEARS (like a decade or so).

There is nothing illegal about running coyotes with hounds in Idaho. The state of Idaho classifies the coyote as "predatory wildlife" and because of this you can hunt them year 'round by any legal means. So you can use hounds if you choose. They are trying to re-classify coons from "furbearer" to "predatory wildlife" as well... I don't know why as the season is already open year 'round for coon. Anyhow, several years ago I maintained a pack of running dogs that could really pour the coal on a coyote. Didn't have any problem finding one either...Idaho Bison wrote:I don't think it's legal in Idaho
Don't mean to hijack your post oregonblues. If you get fast enough dogs, they will run the coyote down and catch him. I've seen it happen plenty of times in the midwest, but probably most of the time you will be shooting here in the mountains and the west. LCK on this board can tell you a lot more about coyoting with hounds in rocky, desert-like country.

I will double check with Mark up here in the Clearwater.
Re: I have been thinking of starting to run yotes
If you're talking about Rhodes, he transfered up to Coeur D' Alene. Mark was the one that clarified the issue for me several years ago when I brought the question to the F&G - he's a good game warden. He said... coyotes with hounds... fly right at it. That is pretty much what all the other houndmen were saying too.Idaho Bison wrote:I will double check with Mark up here in the Clearwater.

It wasn't Rhodes it was a new one. Mark cleared it up and gave me some good info.Idaho wrote:If you're talking about Rhodes, he transfered up to Coeur D' Alene. But my western coyote hound stint was very short, a couple years. Nothing illegal about it though.

Heck, get after those yotes with those trail hounds. If they can run a yote to a standstill in the kind of country your in, they can catch anything else. Best running I have ever had. If you want to up your bear catching percentage in the spring, run a bunch of yotes all winter, it works wonders.

Re: I have been thinking of starting to run yotes
I back LCK on his idea about running your dogs on coyotes. Good moulding for them and they'll should be fit as can be come your bear season. Anything like our jackal you in for lots of action almost all the time.
I dont know about your coyotes to much but a jackal here at home can produce an awesome all round hound it's not always a running heads up race on a hot trail. The canines are more intelligent than the cats and will purposefully try at evading your hounds making them think and draw the common sense abilities out of your hounds.
If you have the correct combination in your team you may never use your rifle , though I would choose a .243 mountain gun like the old pre '64 feather weight toped by a good scope.
If your coyote den in earth burrows between rock piles I believe they may want to seek refuge in the earth's once they tire out. You may want some hard terriers for the ground work. Always have a good LED headlight in your kit for this purpose.
Hope this helps a bit.
