Man, that whole flooding situation is horrible!

I went out with a buddy this week. We hunted from daylight until about 10:00 when it got hot.
My lead female opened a couple times on a fox but it was too old to actually trail. Other then that, I found an awesome little bird point made from churt. It’s about 1” long, 3/8” wide and 1/16” thick. It’s shaped like a long triangle, like the natives made back east. Most of the ones I find are 2” long and are notched heavily for hafting them to the shaft.

That’s a pretty neat find. We have a few camp sites around here where they find quite a few arrow heads of all kinds. Some of them look like they were just made.

I’ve been going about once a week, I’m starting three new dogs with my jagd, so you can all imagine how that’s going. He’s found a few, but they got a lot of learning to do. I’m soaking wet by the time I get back to the truck, did I mention I do not like the summer heat?

Agreed, we could skip it all together if you ask me, then I wouldn’t have to work as much I went down to Colorado this past weekend to the horses hounds and mule sale. It was a blast! Spent some time visiting with some good friends and meet a few legendary houndsmen!

Hollowpoint, those ole pups should be getting pretty big, probably looking like grown dogs.

Beebout-it, that sounds like a fun place to go. Did you buy any horses, hounds, or mules?

Didn’t buy anything, I’ve been contemplating getting into the mules but I basically have no horse or mule experience. I have ridden both but always feel like a kid having to have my hand held because I don’t know anything about them. If I had had a trailer there were some Amish mules that went for reasonable money. Dog prices were all over the place, some went way high and dogs that you would have thought would sell really well ended up no sale due to low bids. Really fun environment though and a ton of great people. I met Van Johnson in a really funny way and after that him and I chatted every time we passed near each other.

I’ve been around horses all my life, but for whatever reason just never fooled with mules. There’s a guy that lives near me here that was a World Champion Seniors roper on a palomino mule he called Clementine. She was a pretty mule and very good obviously.

T, yeah they definitely look the part so I think they’re finished dogs going off appearances. I really like the red male, he looks all cur, leggy and lean, he seems to have more drive and grit. The other one is a little bigger and shows the bulldog influence, but he’s a big baby, if he ever realizes his potential he could be something.

The red dog goes out hunting with the others without hesitation, where as his brother is a bit more tentative till he warms up, then they all go together as a pack. They did get on a few hogs, and they were good sized ones too. The first encounter was on a friends ranch, my jagd found them bedded down in a cedar pocket, I was hoping to hear them all start baying, but it sounded more like a rumble in the jungle. There were a couple scratches but nothing that needed staples. I hope they learn to back up and bay, I need to remind myself they just turned 8 months old.

Sometimes we all forget how old they are. Jason has nice dogs and takes a lot of pride in them. I bet both pups make it. As soon as that bigger one starts to mature he’ll turn it on.

I picked up a new gyp a couple days ago. She’s out of some of my stuff that anothe buddy got from me a few years ago. For what I like in type she is spot on. She’s a black brindle and shines like new money. She has good leg, a deep chest, real Good angulation, and high right flank. Her head shape is nice and she has good ear. He said he hunted her twice and they caught 18 the last hunt she was on and she was at every hog. She good natured and smart so I’m hoping she does well. She’s got a brother that I don’t know if I can live without. He is one fine looking animal in my opinion.

It’s fun to watch them progress, but there’s a part of me that doesn’t limit to see them miss an opportunity. They’ll have plenty more soon enough, for young pups they get out pretty good so far. There’s been a couple times the red dog just goes by himself and doesn’t care if he’s got company or not. I agree, Jason has some good stock.

Glad to hear you got some of your stock back, I’ve seen what you guys do down there and those dogs produce results. I look forward to seeing this upcoming seasons reports. I was planning on doing a trip down your way, but I think I’m gonna wait for the temps to drop a little.

Man the temps aren’t good and the humidity has been worse. Maybe when it cools off we can all get together and make a trip. I can lie as good as anyone and I promise my dead and gone dogs were top shelf.

There’s a gentleman down east of you I believe that has a bay pen for training etc. I’d like to get down there and see what these pups will do, solo and then in company. Then I’ll run to my friends in Hondo, he’s got a 35 acre enclosure with game in it, but it turns into a much less controlled situation (if you know what I mean). Then do some hunting of course.

I don’t think that’s a bad idea. The more they like it the better they will be and the sooner they get business minded.

Been messing around with my pups a bit with some coons lately, coming along nicely. Heading south this afternoon to chase some bears for a few days and for the first time I’m going to leave my old dogs home(10 and 12). They both still go very well but just don’t keep up in a hot bear race. It’s bothering me just thinking about them not being along…not to mention how pissed they will be when I load the truck and leave without them

Man I totally understand where you are coming from. I loaded dogs yesterday and all I took were two one year olds and two SUPER GREEN catch dogs. My nephew brought two bay dogs. Our main catch dog is on the mend right now and my Outlaw dog is like an American Express credit card, I don’t like to leave home without him. He’s salty though and I didn’t want to chance him getting wrecked in the event that these two catch dogs get in there and miss and try’s to help out. He was not happy with me at all and felt guilty. We hunted two spots and ended up getting a small boar bayed. It was a perfect hog for the younger catch dog. It was his second hog ever and the hog was down in a dry creek bed so he had a clear path to him. I was real pleased with him for what he knows.

I hope you get to looks at several bear with those young dogs. They will be better dogs for having to tote the load.
