I agree with all you guys. Here the weather can change quick so especially when going overnight I like filson wool pants, smart wool longhandles and a long chink on top. If I get off to do a lot of walking I just throw the chink up over the horn. If it is wet as hell or snowing real hard I will substitute some shotgun chaps. The shotguns just have two buckles and were a cheap gift made at a saddle shop in Blackfoot Idaho I think but they lay right and do the job. A plus of them being cheap was that they are light leather which works fine here as we don't have many thorns or spines on the bushes and they aren't too heavy. With 13" Schnees wool pants and chinks I am usually pretty comfy. For day in day out rain I still don't think you can beat a good pair of rain pants. They don't look the part in the saddle but like R Severe said I've given up looking right anyway

Wyo just brought up something that sure goes a long way keeping me comfortable for winter riding. Foot wear. Nobody sold the pointy toed packs when I was looking so I have the round toed ones. I use a 2" roper stirrup with no leather cover or footpeice. The roper is a little deeper stirrup made to shed easyer. With no leather on it at all and the edges rounded it sheds real easy even with airbob soles.

With the tops of the pacs 13" my fringe on the chinks keep light rains going down the outside of the boots. Heavy rains and the tin chaps get the nod.
