Ain't that the truth! I was visiting with an old hounddogger today and telling him that I don't know whether I'd buy another hound dog vehicle. Told him that when my little mule went down for the count it was about time to depart. He kinda laughed and I suppose we both figured that I was just blowing air and complaining. Nothing will tear up a good truck faster than bear and lion hunting......

I prefer the term, Hound-dogger, because well, I am not a man lol.

To me a hound-dogger is someone who has a passion for the dogs, not the animal they are chasing. A hound-dogger is someone who buys a brand new 2010 high dollar truck, that night they build a dog box in it... Someone who has prolly lost at least one significant other due to the fact they gave the whole "It's me or the hounds speech" Yeah, that's why the first time I ever met a guy I told him from the start, I'd take my Plotts over you any day, just remember that. I've been blessed to get a guy that loves the hounds almost as much as I do. Hound doggers love their dogs, they can tell who is at the tree by listening to the barks, they can tell weather the dogs are trashing by the sounds of their voices.

The people who don't sit on the internet, because they are standing under a bear or lion tree, those are hound-doggers. People who have 4 hunting trucks, none of which are very reliable, someone with more then one tracking box, too many collars, someone who stops on a dime on a 4 lane highway, just to get a runaway hubcap for a dog pan, someone who breeds their own dogs because they know exactly what they want and how they want it.

A hound-dogger is simply, anyone who hunts with hounds because they dream of one thing, "Better hound hunting experiances" Anyone who has sat in their truck all night waiting for a dog to come out, those are hound doggers. Anyone who drives into a town with a dog box in their truck, and feels proud to be part of one giant family, that is a hound-dogger.

That is just my definition of what a hound-dogger is. Kinda confusing one but it makes sense to me lol.

I'm proud to be part of this family of people who have a pack of hounds.

At my dad's memorial service in Moab UT, the hound doggers filled more seats then actual relatives... That speaks a lot for the support we have for eachother.

Here's some symptoms
* Finding stray magnets stuck to various metallic surfaces around your hunting rig
* Offering a ride to a friend that is not a houndsman and having them refuse it because of the dreadful hound-y stench in your hunting vehicle
* Pulling up at home to find the garbage distributed in the yard, the fence torn up in two places, and the hounds opening in the back seat, and thinking "Bear training opportunity!"
* Leaving your only warm winter coat by the side of the road in -20 degree weather because one of your hounds is still out
* Having the state trooper on the far side of the ridge wave at you and drive on by after the third complaint about your suspicious behavior that week because your hound refuses to load up when you want to go home after an unsuccessful night of coon hunting. The hound is wearing a blue flashing LED collar, and you drive down the road a few hundred yards, stop the vehicle and attempt a running tackle, then get back in, drive another few hundred yards and do it all over.
* Having the supermarket clerk on your side of the ridge call the state trooper when you forget to take your pistol grip tracking receiver off when you go in the store. The trooper knows me and he thought it was pretty funny too!
* Knowing which places on the other side of the ridge will let you tie your hounds there while you hitchhike back by road to get your rig.

A houndsman is someone who has reached a level of knowledge about hounds that they have basically learned all there is to know about hounds and hunting. They have reached the pinacle of success in understanding, reproducing, and training tree hounds.

I have raised, followed, cussed at and cried for these hounds for almost 40 years, but every time I turn one loose, I learn something new about the hound and myself. If it means knowing everything to make someone a houndsman, then I miss the mark.

For that reason, I am not a houndsman. I reckon I never will be.
