Lol. That's great...

I had a beagle at one time... Baraka was her name, but we called her QP (Quarter Pounder) She would go from start to finish on bear races, pulled hair when it came out and everything... We gave her away cuz if you were 50 miles near a deer, she was going for it... The shocker collar didn't work for her, she was just evil lol

Well it is simple... YOU are the alpha male lol.

But yes, I sure liked my beagle. Not really 100% for me though I must say. She was fun though, had a great time with her.

Yeah, mine was a lot like that... That's how our Plotts are... Evil boogers who learn too much, except to avoid the part with the teeth/fangs/claws/spikes/tusks/stingers... Umm, am I missing anything? LOL

Years ago I'd said a hound is a hunting machine that has a one track mind, and that is to hunt. Then I got around a couple redbone hounds that had not been hunted and they laid around next to their trainer and watched coons run for the camera--so much for the one track mind, hunting machine theory.

I have a pack of hounds that I've worked with since they were tit weened pups, and I can pretty much walk them anywhere I want, call them off a tree or a track, from close range or a distance, then send them back to eat the bear. It did take alot of work but a good hound can do both, be a good pet and good hunter as well. Bottom line is whether yoiu are up to the task of making that hound what you want it to be......

I'll agree that a person should pick the color they like and go from there, as each and every breed has some really great hounds in them. I like the Redbone and English hound best, as they have a pretty good nose, pretty good grit, and enough horse sense to make it all happen........

Good luck,
ike

This is just my opinion but any dog of mine I can call off a tree or a track just by hollering is going to go down the road or taking a bullet. I will not tolerate any dog I can whistle at and call him off a tree or a track. Heart and drive will always catch more game than obedience. No thanks, I want the dog I have to DRAG off a track or tree.

But I guess one man's junk is another man's treasure. ;) ;)

As for the last comment, "call them off and then send them back to eat the bear" Any dog you can call off a bear on the ground and then send back wasn't doing much of a job at "eating the bear" in the first place.

I wasn't looking to cause a ruckus, just thought it was funny that a guy would actually BRAG that he could holler his dogs off a track or a bear on the ground.

If any of mine ever did that, I'd be too ashamed to ever admit it publicly, let alone brag about it. Just struck me funny.

I called a bear hunting outfitter buddy of mine back east and read that part to him, I better not write what he said when he finished laughing. I suppose we each look for different things in the type of dog we want.

But I can promise you one thing, I won't be feeding anything I can call off a tree, track or a bear on the ground with a holler.

Not picking a fight, but c'mon that is funny. Holler a dog off a bayed bear and then send him back to "eat the bear." Funny stuff. :D :D

I've been getting some requests for a new video and finally figured out what the focus and title should be hickey, maybe "How to Train Hounds for the Mentally Challenged." I realize the sales market would be pretty small (it may only include you and one or two others) but it would be fun to make. Besides, lots of others may well get a kick out of it if I put your name under the title with an arrow pointing to it...........

And like I said, I have a couple leashes I can send down so you can drag your mutts to a tree!

Hickey, I figure you know alot more about starting shit than catching shit :!:

I for years always thought if a dog could be called off the tree would be a worthless tree dog! But after hunting around west coast bobcat dogs it can be done and is done and if you want to see trees they have trees they make our 60ft pines look like saplings and believe me these dogs lock on a tree and stay and when the dust has cleared the handler says lets go and they go no leashes no BS.  later Andy

And it's good to hear that you have hunted around people who have learned to handle a pack of hounds Andy. I to use to have to drag my hounds off the tree, then my pack grew from three or four hounds to nine. Well, a guy quickly learns that he can't pull nine dogs off the tree alone very well and since I hunted mostly alone I compromised.

I had my old outfitter buddy of mine that guided and ran hounds for over twenty-five years tell me that I would ruin those dogs calling them off the tree. Well, two summers back I got to a bear tree at 8:00 AM and had to walk back to the truck and drive out of the canyon to call DWR. When I left, not one of those dogs paid any attention to me leaving and I didn't return for six hours. That bear was in a different tree but not far from the one I'd left it in. This was the end of June and hotter than hell, but they kept that bear stuck until I returned. I climbed into those dogs and took a few photos, then left the tree and called those four dogs off, and they all came running!

My outfitter buddy hunted bears with me a alot the past few years and about crapped his pants watching me call those hounds off the tree and send them back. And truthfully, I often wonder how all that crap came together. But the only time I pack a leash anymore is when I plan on killing a lion or bear.

I'm with Ike and Twist

I don't know how many times I have watched people have to run down into the canyon to pull their dogs off of a track.. Either because they are running it backwards or found where it is smoking hot (and if you say your dogs have never taken anything backwards then you are a fibber) I can't stand a dog that won't call off.. It's a waste of my time and energy to have to run some dumbass dog down.. My dogs are on the track when everyone else is still trying to catch theirs :D Because after I yelled at them a few times they came back up to me.. (Okay... I might be blue in the face, but they came back to me)

I know I can call them off of a tree.. I haven't yet.. And all be damned if they are still some die hard tree dogs that will stay there as long as anyone else's dog..
