Roy, do these hounds in the above pics have anything other than the old SW blood in them?

Roy, Very nice hounds, I'm curious, how big are your hounds on average? How tall and how much do they weigh? Also what kind of voice do they have? Thanks,
R.M.

Firstly to Mr. Leonard , I have friends in Utah ( Kendall Prisbey and his nephews Chriss and Billy Robb ) they run a strain of Red and White Hound they seem mighty proud of, I wonder if these hounds may be related to those you are refering to ?

Tim now and again Blue Tick was added but from hounds brought in by Trev from Rick Holcomb and I dont know for sure if they were full blood Blue's however they performed well enough for Trev to breed to them . I had a black and white whose sire was close to the original Rick import. I called this hound Bandit I saw him strike a leopard trail in the hotest driest months in the Namibian high desert it was confirmed at least 48 hours old. We knew this because we started that trail that long back and Bandit was recovering from illness and was not in on it. We had to stop the hounds on that trail as night fell. We went in later and cast the hounds along the slope measured time +/- 48 hours later hoping to pick the cat up again. Bandit was in on this and I told my partner to watch him when he cut the line where we started that trail. His tail went round and round over his back , he moved forward a ways in the right direction and opened and started lining out bringing in the other hounds and they all started that old track going again. This was just a very sobering moment of truth.

Our hounds are not huge they average 22kg , they dont have deep throaty drawl like bawls but rather a more melodious " ooowa " - " yooowah " and some will chop and bawl at intervals on trail. Bayed or treed they chop and bawl .

Lets chat more again - catch you guys later.

Roy.

Thanks for the info Roy. I had to google 22 kg, it equals about 48.5 pounds for those of us who don't know what a kilogram is LOL. Anyway, the dogs look good and 50 pounds is about perfect in my book, I could even handle them a little smaller, but not much.

Roy,

The redticks that you have are very nice looking. Do they represent the blood from the Shelly stock?

Roy Sparks wrote:Ike if those two hounds are still with you I suggest you take good care of them or you may have to come retrieve them from my kennels here in SA. Both the Red and the Blue are beauts !! Very similar to our hounds in looks though the blue hound is leaning more in favour of a walker blue type cross to my eye - throwing more toward blue though.

When we dumb asses over here can save enough money I'd like to make a trip over with my buddy Trev Filmer and a younger colleague Richard Morgan and do a visit with you guys - a round trip tour or something like that.

Take care - Roy.
Those are some great looking hounds you have there Roy, and ol' Ike gets a little jealous from time to time about the game you get to ship them on as well. Just promise me one thing, and that is you never tease those dogs of mine about taking them home and putting them on leopard cause they'd leave and never look back ha!

Racheal and Rip

Sly (the black and white bitch dog) was raised as a pup by Shawn Labrum- he got her from Hal in 1983. Hal got the pups from David Welch in St.George Utah. Sly's Dad was Luke owend by David Welch, Luke was out of Joker.......Leon Cox - Jerry Huges. Jerry and David, w/guiding hunters together in the 1970s.

Mike,

That Copper bitch of mine (or Lionheart as I called her) came from a dog Shawn Labrum owned name Sqaw, who came out of a bitch named Rip he owned and got from Hal Mecham as a pup, Rip came out of Mecham's Racheal dog who came from the Joker dog, owned by Jerry Hughs and David Welch.

Roy just idle curiosity but what exactly do you feed all those hounds they really look like they are feed a meat diet or at least a very concentrated high protein diet. and how many dogs in total are you running and do you rotate them and what number do you drop on each track/species?

Somebody sent me this photo of the "wild bunch", a photo back in the day when some of us had already found the "Silver Bullet." Can anybody name these four hombreys?

I found another photo in my war chest of a guy claiming to be Hal Mecham! And he is surrounded by those red and white dogs as well......go figure!

Interesting stuff: Mr. Festus should know about all this him and David being right close Kin.

Whenb Glenn McHarg was bad off and had all them good dogs and asked me to take them before he passed He had 2 sons pr maybe grandson's of Joker. One was very old and out of a daughter of Allen's Ace. He was senile and done. The other was good but before I could pick him up Glenn's widow sent him back over to Nevada. He was a dead ringer to some of these big red and white dogs.

Mike,

You got to talking about the Banjo dog and that's why those old photos came out, and here is the copy that went with it:

This batch of pups, were born at Kennys House....moms old house, south of me/white house.

Hal Mecham owned both parents...Gunner - Rachel,Gunners litter mate were Banjo - Mike Lennard
talking about. I got a pup from Hal and called her Rip.....the mother to Squaw......was the Mother
To your Copper bitch. The Dad to Gunner was Hal's - ol - Red dog , - - '' George Nay - Goverment Hunter'' ?

The - Red and white was born.........I just mixed in Plot.......Chief.........in to my stuff / Rip.

You guys please be patient with me I typed a whole bunch of answers to questions from feeding to goodness knows what all. I had a bunch of questions myself concerning all the pictures you all sent of those great hounds. I went and pressed one or other something on this bloomin machine and killed all the stuff I'd written. Now I only type with one finger and I got to aim properly or I miss the button so its real painfully slow. Will have to read all the latest stuff here and re-write it all. Luckily I'm not skew - eyed so the reading will go quicker.

Catch you later - Roy.

Ike,

Great photos Ike. Yes Gunner was actually suppose to be the better dog. I am not sure on the 4 guys I know Hal is second from left, but is that Kenny and Shawn Labrum Older guy on right I don't know or if I did he was a lot younger when i last saw him.

thanks Ike. I remeber the old Red dog he was very houndy looking as I remember he was the same cross that Sage and Smoke were out of. I guess from old George Nay. The smoke dog was a dead ringer for Jack Butler's last hound and a photo was shown in Full Cry many years ago with the story of Jack's last lion hunt. Milt, Leon and Garn were all in that camp with him.
