I got those pics sent to me in an email a while back it said wyoming???

Been several post asking what was the best western state to hunt lions in, and I'd say wherever those photos were taken of lions running in packs! Maybe northern New Mexico?

Someone asked the question what do you call a group of mountain lions. I looked it up on Wikipedia. This is their answer:

Since the mountain lion is a solitary animal, there is no word to describe a group of them, Unlike the lion which is a social animal and live in a group called a pride.

there was a lot of stories about these 5 lions. A detail of Game Wardens and a biologist were even dispatched to comb the hills outside Sheridan, Wyoming to confirm their presence. Funny no tracks and I would have thought they could look at the photo and tell they were not there.


These photos were taken in Colorado near or on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation very close to the La Plata Mine.About 15 miles as the Crow flies from my house.

It's always been my understanding that when an animal "leaves" tracks, it's because that animal is no longer there. Those biologists can be something else!

Yes iv seen where 7 have been travling togather, and have caught 4 in the same tree.

In this youtube video there's five of them South American longtails together. Check out the looks on the llamas' faces. If chasing those cats, I wouldn't know what to do with that many split races.

I'm sure that it is possible to see five lions together. We put three out of four lions in three different trees, about 60 yards apart. It was two 1 year old kittens about 65 lbs and about an 80 pound female. We never caught the mom but we got sum good pics of the other three. That day made my month. I look forward to catching up to them this year.

here in Utah it is illegal to pursue Kittens or more than one lion, and any two lions traveling together are considered Kittens. The law is put in place to help young kittens not get stretched before they are old enough to be elusive and defend themselves. We actually killed a nice tom this year and had fish and game come and seize it as states evidance. it was on a lion study unit in so utah and the guy that collared it told the game cops he collared it with it's mother a week prior. case ended up getting dropped as soon as they saw how big this "Kitten" was, but we almost got in deep shiz for killing it. my buddy that's holding this cat is 6' 4" 250lbs double click on the photos to see them full size.

It's illeagal to kill spotted kittens, or a female with spotted kittens in NM. In AZ it was leagal to kill ANY lion until recently. The law was changed to resemble New Mexico's more. It's illeagal to kill spotted kittens, or a female with spotted kittens there also. Az also made a season on lion hunting at that time. Until then, it was year around.

The most lions I have ever seen traveling sort of together(notice I use that term loosely) was 6. Old paddle footed female , 3 bouncing babies about 5 months old, and 2 big sub female kittens probably 17 months old, and last but not least the tom sub sibling who was having to keep some considerable distance but still tagging along behind.

This is not all that uncommon in well established female areas where she regularly raised a 2 to 3 kitten litter with littlel molestation. I sure as heck haven't seen that in a hell of a long while though around here.

So in az and nm you can chase multiple cats traveling together as long as they don't have spots? That's what utah needs to go to. how many times have you cut an adult tom and adult female traveling together? all the time, same goes for two toms two females and like you guys have seen 5 or 6 traveling together. if that tom we killed would have been following a female in heat and they could have proved that, we would have been prosicuted for killing a kitten by utah law! Hell of a kitten.

I just finished reviewing the proclamation after reading your post and I can't find where it said that you can't turn loose on multiple lions traveling together. It does forbid pursuing females with kittens, but as far as the law stating that anytime 2 or more lions are together that they are presumed to be a female with kittens, it ain't there.

The fishcop that told you that was blowing smoke up your ass. Maybe he was fishing for a confession, maybe was truly uninformed, but either way he was wrong. That is probably why the charges were dropped.

As most of us know, there are several logical instances where more than one legally adult cougars may be traveling together. A female in estrus being followed by a tom, for example, or two siblings recently striking out on there own will often travel together. A territorial tom or female tracking down a trespasser will also leave a double track. So the law does not assume every multiple track is a female with kittens, despite what your fishcop friend may tell you.

Good point Kevin and a guy should aways read the proclamation rather than listen to any conservation officer. The reason I say that is regulations change and COs have lots more to deal with than what is legal or not when talking about hounds. Matter fact many of them don't have much experience with what houndsmen do. I had one tell me that it was not legal to turn my hounds loose without a track, and our conversation got pretty heated. But the law is pretty clear on that and a man can cast his hound to strike and that game warden was dead wrong. If the day comes a man has to have a track to release a hound then we might as well all move to the snow belt and only hunt fresh snow storms....
