I think alot of it boils down to ego, Your just not hangin with the big boys unless unless your killing cats... The DWR wants them out so thay can get their high dollar sheep established. They are more than willing to let the houndsmen do the dirty work for them. And alot of us are just stupid enough to get it done.

I'm from UT. Grew up there. I think UT is slowly murdering their cat populations. It's sad really..... One reason I left.....

I get sick tired of other guys in other hunting forums preaching every time they see a cat track they assume its a monster tom and want to kill it. Our deer herds are hurting, yet everyone thinks the lions are flourishing. The herds have a direct correlation with the lion population also the problem with the SFW is they have alot of money and we houndsmen don't......

I just got an email this morning that is going around from the head of the SFW here in Utah.
This is the first line of the email, all I can do is laugh:
"
As hunting season gets going full swing in the west the next couple days, there is a lot to be excited about. Kelly Devenish took this near record book buck on a general season, public land archery tag in the Central region of Utah. Congratulations Kelly – all that lion control work you do helps out!"
Isn't the a line from the movie Dumb and Dumber? If not, it should be. That's what we are up against here. Yup, our future is in good hands here in Utah.

All of us houndsmen are full of crap, all we want to see are lions. At least thats the response i get from other hunters. Us hound guys who actually know what we are looking at or for are just making up this farce that the lion population is in serious trouble. Fact of the matter is the best and most dedicated buck hunters or any other game for that matter are houndsmen.Iput almost as much into hunting mulies as i do hounds. This "special boy" group we know as SFW are really the worst and don't want to here it from us as we are inferior as hunters to them when the facts are the opposite. Another bad deal is one of the big SFW boys has been a hound dogger for a long time and I don't think he's helping us too much. If one dipshit, I mean deer hunter stumbles onto one lion kill it might as well be a thousand. These guys pump each other on how much they know, and how they've got it all figured out as a result of their 1 1/2 months a year (most less) they spend on the mountain a year. We as hunters need to do our part and be there at the rac meetings and anything else we can and fight. Most of all we need to be very selective ifwe opt to take a lion and should put it in others heads to do the same. I'm just glad their precious elk are large enough that the coyotes can't kill them, and that they are not as prone to try to cross the highways or the lions would get the blame for a decreasing elk heard as well. Funny thing is a lion will take an elk at any given oppourtunity, but they aren't killing them off like they are the deer!

I got into it with one of these same type of "trophy deer hunters" on a job site last year. he was telling me how many lions he has shot and let lay while he was out hunting. it made me so mad we almost hit the dirt! I bet he aint the only one doin dirt out there while hunting deer. I could not beat it into his head that we drive for days and days just to find a track to run. he said nope, they're everywhere! How do you battle that mentality?

Well Houndawg and Houndem I would say you are spot on. Recently at at State meeting concering dramaticaly upping the female quota in out little hard pressed area we had the campaign manager for the New Mexico Wildlife Federation( Oscar damn nice guy) and the Chapter head for the local SFW, ( Dusty). They both said you were the only lion hunter that stood up and had his facts together other than setting in the corner chewing beechnut and saying let us kill em all. We want your story we can be a VOICE. Ha! Ha! I bought off on it and gave it to them. They could care less and they don't even know I am passionate about big bucks and bulls and antelope. But Lions still have a @ucking place here and if you don't agree then you are bias when it comes to big game species. That's ok, but don't yank my chain! A lot of folks don't realize that big game houndsmen spend many times more days in the woods on a yearly basis then do the sport elk or deer hunter. Oh they may pay somebody to be out there for them but they have a special agenda. We see a lot of what goes on and we scratch our heads when we hear what the local fish cops have to say. They won't condemn a coyote or a poacher but they will howl like a banshee if they have the slightest indication a bear or a lion getting a little protien.
The deal is they don't care a rat's ass about hound guys or gals. And the sporting groups which are wonderful in cause but deluzional, hate all predators because that is what they think stands between them and the record books. They would never admit to their inadequate set of skills and so depend on a 600 yard sniper rifle to bring home the bacon to Momma.
I love you Dawg but they ain't no real help.
Nope we are in this thing together sink or swim...........
