Looks to me like Mike has the Britchen just about right. It only needs to be about 4 to 6 inches below the point of the rump. Your going to get a lot more "hold back" with the rump than you are if it's banging off his legs. The lower you put it the more it's hindering your animals movements when he needs it most.

Mike is here with me and he said this was one of his 5 year old colts going into the bridle.

I know R Severe mentioned a different way of rigging a cruper on this forum that takes the sawing action out of it as the mule/horse walks. Since he had some problems putting pictures on here, here is a pic of what he was talking about.

when riding mules you need a good britchen, and make sure it has good leather. I was coming form off a hogs back and my britchen broke, within in the next few feet my saddle was on the mules neck and the only thing keeping me on was a hand full of his tail until I could get him turned up hill to readjust. I ended up taking my back cinch around his rump for a make shift britchen, to get me off the mountain. If you need a good well built one get wayne soper out of utah to make you one.
