Spencer,
Not sure how to hobble break a horse. like said before everyone I have tried to hobble always run faster with them on then off

. Another thing to do is break them to "ground tie" I do this with all my rope horses for two reasons: 1. when I stop my horse as I rope I don't want any movement from them I want them straight and still. 2: If I need to get off for some reason I don't want them to be running around I want them to stand. The way I do it is I simply step off and walk away if they fallow or run off I back them, not lead them, to the spot where I wanted them to stand. a few times of backing up along ways they figure out it is easier to stand reather then backing up. This will help your horse learn to stand patiently at a tree.

Realize this is about tying and good advice here on that.
If there's grass I hobble and put an extra Astro collar (if I have one) on one horse.
Just use another normal collar added to the astro or attach to your saddle horn.
Reason I do this is grass is scarce where I hunt so I can save on packing in hay or pellets to feed them when they are high lined at night if they can feed during the day.
Love that I can check how much they may have moved at any time if I am hunting within Garmin range and get back if it looks like one's heading back to camp or home. Also don't have to bell one to find them and who wants to make any more noise then they have to in elk country.

Thanks for the tips. I DO want to teach my horse to ground tie as well so I appreciate the tip. In the arena she ground ties, but I figure out of a fenced in area she is just going to start grazing and walk off.

Same thing applies there back her back up when she walks off. I like the tracking collar idea, before you hunt put one on and walk away, when your horse gets out a ways grab it and back it up to the spot it left.

I have broke alot of Horses to hobble and my way is sorta of a cowboys way of doing it but it works. First i start off by puting a set of three ways on the horse and try and spin them in a circle this most of the time with a colt that never had nothing like this happen befor will try to pitch a fight but about six hours of three ways every day for a week does the trick for me. But the piss heads i will take and hobble them to a post and this will dang sure do the job but this is not good to do if you dont know what you are doing. I would not haul a horse to the woods if he could not hobble good i did one time and when i got back he had flipped over and forked himself in betwen two oak trees was not fun getting him out and my saddle was not prety.
