i think thats what gets a lot of younger guys started in the sport but not what keeps you chasin them. i know its what got me started. i think thats the only book i read multiple times and wanted hounds ever since! i have never been around hounds/houndsmen or even seen a hound until i got one but now i have some it seems like i see them everywhere lol.

I was born into it, but my dad wasn't, him and I are the only hunters of any kind in our whole family.

Dad liked the dogs so much because he said they were the only thing that wouldn't hurt you! Dogs don't care what you drive, what clothes you wear, what you listen to, or who your friends are, they are there for you no matter what.

My little sister could have joined the dark side and liked the hounds, but she doesnt. It just isn't in her.

Hounds and hunting run through my veins so deep and crazy I can not get enough of it. I would rather clean dog crap and scrub dog buckets then not be around them.

To me it is not only the progress the dogs make, but the progress I make, both as a hunter and a human. I know I am a better person to be around when I am in the woods with dogs versus sitting at home or in town. When you travel many many miles with a dog, share blood with that dog, and watch him grow from a pup to a veteran hound, you have to look back and notice how much more wisdom YOU have as well.

I don't have much for blood family, I don't know a single person from my dads side, most from my moms are either passed away or I do not get along with them, but the family dad and I gathered up from hunting is all I need! Some people on this site have known me my whole life and are considered family! I would rather call them and visit then someone related to me somehow who has no idea what hunting with hounds is about!

The people I have met alone are worth all the hardships hunting with hounds sometimes bring. It's in my blood and no matter what it will always be something that defines me till the day I day.

The only people who truly understand what makes us do what we do are fellow hunters, everyone else has NO idea what they are missing :)

Great post, could not have said it any better. As far as myself, I read Where the Red fern grows in fifth grade and wanted a hound dog ever since. three years later I got my wish.

No one in my family ever ran hounds. I picked it up on my own and never looked back. For me its the thrill of the chase, when I hear ol Bandit bust on a hot track and start driven hard, it makes the hair on my neck stand up.

It's also like a chess game trying to guess where the critters goin next, and bustin tail to get there.

Hound hunting is something I cannot explain to anyone. It's funny my friends will go out and party on weekends. and I'll be out in the middle of no where tearin through the swamp after a pair of crossed up hounds. They'll ask where I was, and look at me with a stupid stare when I tell em'.

And I think thats part of it too. We are a special breed, and only one another can understand what we do and why we do it.

It speeds up the hunt which ads adrenline, and the pride of a good run equals pleasure of a son rounding third base, and its inclusive of others and their hounds when you want it to be....and during off season your feeding a friend.
