I would most definantley get a finished dog. A good finished dog will teach your pups and teach yourself more than you could imagine.
That is some of the best advise you will get. If you were to take a poll on here, and only ask the old gummers, I believe that most every one of them would tell you that it's cheapest in the long run to buy a good dog first.
I've been at this for several years now (27) and this fall I ended up without the dog power that I needed. I went to see a guy and paid a lot of money for a good dog, so that I wouldn't have to jack around for 2 or 3 years to get back to where I was. I would say that without this newly purchased dog, I was ahead of you, just because I have dogs that will trail and sooner or later catch. But I wanted to go just a little farther, in less time, so I bought a dog.
The type of terrain that you want to hunt, along with the conditions, should dictate where you look for a dog. There are people out there that will sell a dog that are honest. There are also many more that will burn you, just for a quick buck. I read all of the posts on here about buying a dog "under the tree". Sometimes that's just not possible. You need to do your homework on ANYONE that you might consider buying a dog from, and be willing to spend more money than most of your friends think you should. Good luck.

im not too far from you, i work at carlin south and i am looking for a decent lion dog too and found it was easier to say than do, i have talked to several people and they all said their doggs were the best, but most couldnt give what bloodlines they were from, I talked to jeff allen over the phone and it didnt sound like too big of a deal for him to show his doggs work, but with christmas just going etc, i didnt have time to go to kanab utah, but i plan to go see them in jan or feb

he told me he has two male walkers, they were both started and could tree their own lion in the snow and had alot of promise, in the beginning of december they were about 1100.00, but the price would go up as they progressed, i will call him on my next days off, to see if he still has them, seems like a nice guy on the phone he said he also has gascons too but i didnt ask about them
