Yup wet females and yearling kittens and not a blink of an eye.....

What I think needs to be addressed most is 3 things.
1. Unit Size. (this has been hashed enough so no further comment from me)
2. Quota Numbers. (this is just laughable so again no comment from me)
3. We need to count ANY female taken in the female category and not just what the division decides is an adult female.

Can someone please tell me what the rational from the divisions standpoint was when they decided to only count adult females as females in the plan?

To hide the numbers of females that are actualy killed is the only reason i can see.... they say its to monitor the breeding age females, but yet when they do bobcat numbers they look at total female harvest?? I have asked this over and over again

This is just something to think about. It has been over 40 years since have hunted lion in Utah. So I probably don't know what I am taking about. Back then at the end of the bounty days we would look for a week to find a lion track. Someone decided that we needed the lion to keep the deer herds in balance. So they were protected. From what I read and hear, there seems to be a lot of lions there. Now someone thinks we need to kill more lions so the deer herds can come back. The deer hunters want to hunt deer . The lion hunters want to hunt lion and not kill females. We were paid more for females than toms here and took all the kittens from inside a female that were develop and bounty them also. So who is right? Maybe it is somewhere in the middle with no one getting there way. Think about it. Dewey

Dewey,
15 years ago there where a lot of lions. Numbers in all units where great and some dandy toms could be harvested. The deer numbers kept dropping so the kill the lion was the word everyone spoke. They started the harvest objective, and anything that would climb a tree was killed. Some of the lions still had milk dripping off of there lips. Everyone became a guide and the more they could kill the fatter there wallets became.

Places I use to hunt have no lions left, yet the deer numbers keep dropping. I have talked to a couple of biologists and they can't understand how come the deer numbers keep dropping with hardly any lions left. I still think fawn survival is the key to getting deer numbers back, and the lions are not killing the fawns.

So, I for one would love to meet in the middle. Finding a track once a week would be great.
Not wanting to start a pissing match just my opinion.

Rick: I think wildlife biologists are realizing that managing a species for the sake of a species does not work. The hole picture has to be considered. Three of my life long hunting buddies are wildlife biologists they feel that what we are doing to protect a species is doing more damage in the long run. If the habitat is in good shape animals will be there. The deer numbers will drop until they look at what caused them to be so high in the 60's and 70's.I don't think they will be willing to copy what caused the high numbers. Their is only one thing that there is to much of on this earth and it is the thing that no one wants to do anything about. MAN. It is pretty hard to start a pissing match with me unless I want one. Thanks for your input. Dewey

Dewey,
Right you are, MAN does have the biggest impact. There have been a lot of changes since the 60's more freeways and roads, more homes in prime winter range. Deer hunting has changed too, from more powerfull guns and optics and everyone owning 4 wheel drives and atvs. When I was a kid in the 60's there was a few willy jeeps and a few 4 wheel drive trucks. Most of the hunting was done on foot or horse back. I remember most of the people my dad hunted with had open sites and lever actions.

Thanks for your input, it is just getting frustrating watching something I love to do go down hill.

This was a great win for concerned houndsmen BUT i wouldnt expect to see it again!! 2 different board members stated basically police yourselfs and if you want more lions quit killing females...... to some that up to me it means you are DUMBA**es for killing your own sport!!! The management plan is coming up for review in a couple months!! We want every houndsmen in the states opinion so in the mean time we are going to come up with was to reach everyone and may ask for volunteers in your area? So be thinking of good candidates or if you may be will to represent your area and fellow houndsmen!
