Yes you can definitely not expect pen speed to translate to hunting speed.

Take them out in the woods and it can be a different story. The speed I am interested in is not the first half mile sprint but where the dog is at in a running bear race at the 5 mile point. Same thing bobcat hunting a lot of speed is good on a jumped cat but the dog needs brains more than speed and also the trailing ability to get the cat jumped.
What kind- -of dogs are u using? What breed is gone have good speed, and bottom for a long race up to8-10 miles ?so your saying a walker may not do as good in woods as pen?
Most of my dogs are mix breed. The best dogs with bottom and speed for 10+ mile bear races I like are actually Walker dogs out of 2 sons of Loose Bruce - Hondo & Frontier Tall Timber. I have run all breeds and other walkers and I have yet to find anything that can keep up with dogs that descend out of those 2 dogs. I however have a 10 month old Duncan B&T, that is really impressing me but she is still trashy as hell.

I really think you are making a mistake in worrying about which breed is best more than breeding behind the dog. True from my experience certain walker dogs I think are the best but I also think most of the walker dogs out there are culls.

I have been looking for Loose Bruce dogs down here.... Cant find one, I would like to find some I would LOVE to have some of that blood down here, I have heard a lot about the Loose Bruce dogs, If could get hooked up with someone who has them I would greatly appreciate it... I have spent ALOT of time looking for that line of dogs down my way.... Im gone ask one of my buds who runs out side fox pens what he thinks.. So yall are saying a running walker may not have as much bottom, but has more speed than some of the other dogs..

Hershal joyner has that line . I believe he is in Kentucky . not positive on that . the one's I seen are cold nosed gritty and fast but you gotta watch out I have heard some pretty shystie things about him on this website .
What I meant about no bottom end is no grit . not all are that way . they are bred to chase so when game stands it's ground and don't wanna be chased them dogs quickly find there way out of that situation .

Alright, ill try and get ahold of him... So they just don't have much grit?
every walker I seen in a pen wont quite putting teeth on one... I reckon it depends on how old you start a dog, whats your opinion on that?

oh and to answer your question about what do I think about the Walker dogs with a boar in a pen . well everything I ever seen in a pen doesn't apply to anything in reality. I through a bunch of pups in a hog pen and they went completely nuts once they heard that first squeel . hogs chasing dogs , dogs chasing hogs it was hilarious . like putting a dog in coyote or fox pen it can shine in there but can be a whole different story out side .
