When we have had those problems we started a lighter or burn cheat grass and see what the smoke or flame does. That usually will tell you what kind of tracking conditions we are up against.If it rises its usually good hunting. If it huggs the ground the scent isnt rising. But when its bad we just keep hunting.

Just my two cents I might be totally off but it makes sense to us

I had one of those experiences a couple of nights ago. We were coming home from coon hunting and we saw a coon running down the middle of the road. My dogs didn't strike it from the truck and it took several minutes of walking them back and forth for them to pick up the track on the side of the road. I don't know if it was because we had coons in the truck and they didn't realize there was a new coon or what, but it was definatley odd I thought.
