I lion hunt with hounds in the black hills as well and can confirm that many lions are harvested by deer hunters shooting onsite. I know several people over there that have spotted lions on multiple occasions. The local game wardens confirm this as well. We lucked out and talked to a guy that had just seen a lion an hour before, it just layed under a tree looking at him while he got out his camera and took pictures at 80 yds. No lion tag in his pocket either, sure next season he will.

Surely he must of meant the Black Hills of Wyoming. If not I think I would be keeping that kind of info to myself. Just a suggestion.

Doogie, We have been having some really good snow conditions over here. Unfortunately I havn't been capitolizing on it. Ha! Ran a bobtail all afternoon. Got up into some nasty rock slides and just couldn't get the damn thing to leave that area. He was deffinately an educated cat. Finally caught my dog crossing the road at about 7:00 tonight and called it a day.

I know its hard to believe but they really are knocking the hell out of our cats without the use of hounds. I guess it kind of tells you what kind of population we have over here. I think if you told a guy in any other state that you was going to go out and see if you could call in a lion they would laugh their butt off. I just hope that they keep taking females and sub adults. Maybe that will irritate the anti's enough to rethink the use of hounds issue. Ross

I see on the GF&P site someone shot a 5 month old male. I bet from 100 yards he was a huge cat. lol

its a shame they dont let at least s.d residents run lions with hounds whether it be kill season or just run season. i unfortunately dont get to run big game very often but i know when you put a little pressure on them with hounds that it is less likely to have problems with the critters that venture into places they shouldnt be. i hope south dakota gets this mess figured out soon. i would move there in a heartbeat if they did. LOL.

I'm a South Dakota houndsmen as well and I have pondered why not the use of hounds. It makes perfect sense you would not be harvesting young adults or as many females. Well the only logical answer I can come up with is the GFP knows exactly what it is doing. I think they want to controll the population fast and then close the season all together. I'm not a highly intellegent guy but (come on )the stage is set to take females and the quickest way to cut numbers in a hurry is by the taking of females. And I believe the GFP will say in a couple of years hey no season at all. Yes that will keep the anti-hunt's happy and well you hunters had your fun but ya all just shot to many females. That's what I think ,the GFP will blame the hunters in the end and go off scot free knowing full well they never intended to keep the season open for a long period of time. They had to have looked at other states and I think they know full well what is the best way to controll a population for the long haul. Just want to ride the fence and not stir the pot hey take a butt chewing for a few years not a every year.

Did you guys see that SB75 made it out of committee? Also maybe someone smarter than me should look up South Dakota Codified Law 41-8-15 and see how they interpret it. Cause it looks to me like we could be using hounds to run them right now. Maybe someone with more knowledge could elaborate.

41-8-15. Dogs prohibited in hunting big game--Exception--Violation. Except in the hunting of mountain lions during established hunting seasons, no dog may be used in hunting big game animals. A violation of this section is subject to § 41-8-18.

no dice, and i wouldn't get brave either,i can still run bobs in the hills but i wont even look that direction during lion season,there is no way you can prove your not running lions, and with these frigen ignorant nazis you are guilty no matter what because you own a dog

From what I understand there is a bill in the legislature that will allow the running of lions with dogs in South Dakota. I only know this because in the Yankton Press and Dakotan yesterday there was an anti-hunter about how evil hunting with hounds is.

Hope that works to see it. I would like to write a response to show the ignorance of this statement in the paper. If anyone has some hard facts or good ideas to present pm me and I plan to tell people around this area the truth. The last thing we need is people who have no idea about hound hunting voting on issues concerning it.

Hey guys get this! Just read the article from the yankton paper(listed above). Not too many things fire me up but this takes the cake. I Saw the lady's name that wrote the article, Soi called information and got her number, we then called her up and verified who she was and very politley asked her where she got her information on hound hunters. And quess what, She said the she got it from the Humane Society(suprise suprise). So we went on to tell her that our hounds are very well kept and have all the vetrinarian care needed, we then continued on to invite her to visit our home, to verify the quality of our hounds care. She instantly shut down and wanted to discuss her article no more and stated she did not have time for the conversation. We finished up with mentioning to her that the next time she felt like publishing her personal feelings maybe she might educate herself and do more research, then atleast she would have more sources to back up her mindless babble or maybe get some knowledge on the matter and shut up.

Any way I got her number and everyone should give her a call. But be some what polite and so we don't look like a bunch of savages.
