We caught 1 that weighed 501. Weighed him on gravel pit scale. He was town bear eating out of garbage cans. Skull didnt even make 20in. For the most part a 400 lb bear is a whopper around here

We have taken a bunch over the years that dressed out between #400 and #480.
Only one that made #500.I have never been able to get a live one onto a scale to weigh it.Maybe if I had some Plotts I could.

I was taking a guy from San Diego Ca. who wanted to shoot a bear and that was the day my dogs treed my personal best 549#. He was a monster, lucky for us he treed above a road so we rolled him down and got him to a scale. The shooter got a rug made out of it and it was 9' by 9'. I have killed a lot of bay up bears on the ground in the 400 range but that was my only 500 pound bear and the funny thing was is that he treed.

Livetohunt, I don't hunt the grindestone any more, I got to many good dogs messed up or killed in that hell hole. But I have been on trophy bears in there. The East side is where I got my big boy as well.

Steve Phipps (Crazy Cascade Blueticks) has caught some monster bears over the years (500+ and 600+ pounders.). His largest is a 765-pound California black bear that ranked #1 on the Boone and Crockett at the time. His bears are the largest I have ever heard of being caught with hounds.
