When I first started at this hound thing my friend and I bought brother and sister half bloodhound half bluetick. My female was killed before I got to hunt her and my buddy ended up giving his away and it treed its own bear at 8 months. They had great noses and were built really well, friendly and fast with huge voices. I wish I could find the people we bought them from now, too bad.

My bloodhound will chase deer
She has absolutely NO tree in her.. Fabulous nose.. Scared to death of a raccoon, bobcat etc.. She is not brave unless she is standing behind the other dogs.. She has an uncle who works in a prison, she is tracking lines.. She is not hunting lines..

Re: Blood Hounds + Hunting = ???
When the laws in Victoria changed to exclude all breeds except pure Bloods and Beagles from being used on deer, we had no option but to take a good hard look at the Bloodhound lines available. As you'd expect, sorting the lines with good hunting genes out from amongst the show lines is taking some doing, and I think it'll be a few generations yet before we're seeing good, reliable hunting lines. There are some very good Bloodies hunting right now, but getting them to throw really consistent litters is another matter.
The rivalry between those who run big dogs, and those who run the little tricolours is like any other sporting argument. Truth is that a good dog is a good dog, and the size of the dogs in the pack does not dictate the number of deer taken off them.
Bloodhound owners insist that their dogs are a little better at getting through berry tangles (I'm not so sure about that) or through water..... and of course, some people just like ugly dogs.

They should voice in the scent.
The baying when they put a deer out of its bed, or when they bail it, will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck if you have the smallest fraction of a hunter's soul.
The best place to ask questions that I know of is the deerhunter forum at http://www.deerhunter.com.au/vb/index.php
Bear in mind that it is not the most genteel forum, and some Australian humour can be typically very abrasive, but humble people asking sensible questions generally get a reasonable answer.

Well i dont know why everyone hates a bloodhound. I have one that is 3 time faster than my plott is on a track. Trees and stays on the tree until someone comes to get him off the tree. but he is a touch aggressive but not a the tree. So every once and a while you will find a good one that is open mouthed and strikes of the lead or around the truck. The one i have is a gritty dude with no stop to him. Everyone has their voice on the matter, I know of someone else in Vernal Ut that has an old bloodhound that will out hunt most of his other dogs, but the bloodhound hates the cold and will not get out of the dog house below 30 degrees. It just take some time to find the right lines and know what lines you are looking for.
If you ain't cheating you ain't trying! "thank you Navy for that little one"

Re: Blood Hounds + Hunting = ???
I have a 3 year old male Blood that we hunted on bear in California when is was allowed and we use him for fox and coon here in SW Oregon. He is not the grittiest dog won't get to close but will stay with a mean bear and will kill a coon or fox in seconds if caught I the ground. He trees fairly well on bear and coon. He does have speed to him he keeps up with the rest of the dogs fairly well. He is pretty open on a hot track but silent on a cold one. Has a voice you can hear for miles. His down fall is he does not rig, but will take a track of the ground very well. He was the easiest dog to trash break and handles great. I do agree it does take a lot more work to get him into running shape than my walkers and plots. I would say he is about 85-90lbs in running shape. We just crossed him to a nice plot female that is medium nosed, good rig dog, excellent tree dog, and will stay with a mean one all day. Pups are about 9 weeks old now and lookin good so far only time will tell.
