MTH,how much of your love for Tack has to do with his appearance ? Honestly ? If your true appreciation of Tack was for just those performance qualities that you suggested then it would seem that you would have an equal appreciation for Diamond Jim himself and he did live long enough to make his mark on the breed and prove his worth.

Althou I never saw Diamond Jim run, I did see Tack GO at the Grand American in the 70s' !! Besides "His Looks" Tack left me with my mouth Hanging open by his Ability alone ..

That being said I have a much greater Apparition for "Mountain Music Blue" and what he Produced then Diamond Jim .. But this is only my thoughts by Articals and "Hear Say"

Thus My Breeding are concentrated on Mountain Music Blue by Using the English breeding with links thru Vanzant's Sam rather than thru Diamond Jim..

Tack was pure Sm. Riv. blood. Are you a fan of W. Haslouer dogs, esp. D. Jim? I have dogs that are heavy D. Jim and Vaughn's Mack up close(5th gen.) and Chiefs Bl. Dancer(3rd gen.) that I'm crossing on my Cameron blood.

So let me see if I am understanding you correctly. The best coonhound you ever saw GO was Tack, son of Diamond Jim but you decided to create a breeding program around Vanzant's Sam based on articles and hearsay ? :?

No I said I'am Breeding thru Vanzants Sam to Mountain Music Blue .. When you breed a heavy Mountain Music Bred Bluetick to a English Coonhound that is heavy in Vanzants Sam (Which is Bred with Mountain Music Blue) you can Jump Many Generations back to Match Common Genetic's .. The Hear Say was Mountain Music Blue Compaired to Diamond Jim..

Ok I understand but that doesn't negate the fact that Tack was directly out of Jim.Seems that the hearsay would be in disagreement with what you saw with your own two eyes in Tack.Or was Tack just an anomoly in the offspring of Jim ?

Well Considering that Tack " A CoonHound " is the Only Bluetick that has come as close to winning the World .. Well I guess he was just an anomaly !! lol

I can't argue with you there. BUT, as a Louisianian who's ancestors homesteaded here in the Spanish Colonial days, how do we account for the almost total absence of a hunting hound culture in French Louisiana? No one can argue that my state has an extremely rich and proud heritage of producing some of the finest tree hounds that have ever hit the swamps and piney woods, but with just a little research you'll see that they were almost universally produced by men of Scots-Irish ancestry. In coastal south Louisiana, which is the only true "French" Louisiana, hunting with hounds is almost completely foreign.

I'm not making any kind of argument that French blooded hounds were not being imported into the United States as early as the 19th Century. I just don't believe they were coming in any kinds of numbers with French immigrants. One thing to remember is that there are three types of French immigrants to Louisiana in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The first, the Parisian French, actually came in very limited numbers and settled almost exclusively in the New Orleans urban area. The few families that actually immigrated there did so mostly prior to 1815. These men tended to be somewhat aristocratic and if anyone was likely to import French hounds, it was these guys. I'd love to see evidence that they did bring hounds, but so far I haven't seen any. The other group, and far more in numbers, were the Caribbean French. These creoles were also aristocratic and could have afforded to import hounds, but they immigrated here as 2nd and 3rd generation sugar planters from the Caribbean Islands. I know they imported voodoo, gumbo, and gris-gris, but no Gascons. I've never heard of a hound culture in the Islands. Of course the most famous French immigrants to Louisiana were the Cajuns, but they were not really French at all. They were Acadians from Nova Scotia and in Canada they were almost universally farmers and fishermen. The same pursuits they still maintain largely today. They were of a soci-economic class that was most likely to have a hound culture, yet that culture never seems to have developed.

Even the most famous Louisiana houndsman of all time, Ben Lilly, lived in Morehouse Parish in extreme northeastern Louisiana, where the population is almost exclusively of Scots-Irish descent. I know that the great tree hound breeds originated in France, but historically, in this country at least, it's the Anglos who seemed to have the hound culture locked down. I wonder why?

Larry, has the Roussou sp? family and their french hounds been historically documented and proven?
I read they were plantation owners with a very large number of french hounds. As for historical documentation in the form of the written word I am not counting on much to show up. I was sent Bill Harshmans hand written notes on the Smith's Blue Ann siblings and their offspring. Even Harshmans notes differ from what the UKC validated on the peds. Which brings up the actual validity of the written word concerning early American hounds and their ancestry. Without multiple sources corroborating, I will trust pics more. A pic is worth a thousand words and doesn't lie...pre photoshop era of course! The lack of clear written documentation is, I beleive, caused by three factors. Firstly, the people who were the best breeders and houndsmen, probably couldn't read and write - talk about a socio-economic class. Secondly, the vast majority of the rich plantation owners, had what was in their mind at the time, more important issues to write about. Namely politics and large social events. Thirdly, the houndmen of that time period did not realize the importance of what they were doing. I think each and everyone of them thought that houndsmanship was a basic God given right and deserved no special consideration, other than the rare Birdsong or ect.

Bow/Steve, Harshmans' notes show Scout to be a littermate to Ann of Fairlee, Freckles, Speck and 4 others. Now we know how he was bred!
