Sackett,
Milt still lives in the same house in Gunlock. Dick's cafe is long gone.

17 pages of finger pointing and "education" and it won't change a thing..... except to further divide the sport from within.

Had coffee with my buddy a while back. He is a DWR officer. I took him out this year and we took a large tom I have been watching for the last five years. He is probably the most level headed warden I know. He tagged two lions a few weeks ago. Both were taken by outfitters. One hunter was from Texas the other from Australia. If you put them nose to tail they would have measured 9 feet. Both females both barley legal.
Rec hunters are doing the same. They is a mentality down here in my neck of the woods that we need to kill all cats, they are killing the deer. You can feel it at the rac meetings. This year when some units closed DWR just added more tags. What is that all about? SFW wants the lions and bear dead, they make no bones about it. Their people are very vocal about it.
I am afraid that we are headed for an eye opening experience in the future. The bear plan is going to change a lot, along with the lion hunt.
I hunted a lot this year Caught one good lion for my friend and one more that we did not make it into, it killed one of my buddies dogs. Two cats and a lot of mule miles and diesel. I think fishing is sounding better, no ridges, canyons or mountains for that matter. Worst thing would be waves but I can stay in camp and drink beer on those days.
Mulehound.

Bency, same guy, never said i was innocent .It was eight years ago . I will say it was the last time a female died over my dogs.I also have said several times that i never thought we'd run outa lions.A guy never knows how good you have something till its gone.I also said i think regular guys are just as hard on females as guides are. For every outfitter we got here we got 10 or 15 guys out running . Probably 8 or 10 of them either have a tag or a buddy with a tag.If the outfitter in the area has got 6 or 8 guys he's hunting, and everybody is killing whatever they catch and half are females, i know our population can't handle it.Up until about 2002 we had an average age of about a 4year old lion killed in northern Utah, now we'redown to about a 1 1/2 year old lion. THATS THE AVERAGE AGE! I really don't know if this post will do any good or not ,but we've screwed our lion hunting up probably to the point it ain't never coming back.If there's still some good lion hunting where your at it might not hurt to see what we've done so you might try to prevent it where your at. Apparently your pissed at me,but i ain't the one that put your outfitter link on here .If i misread it then i'm sorry. Not many guys can say they've never done something they regret,i know i can't, but i've learned a few things in 20+ years of hounddogging and the first is killing females will equall less opportunity to hunt in the future.

Ken D. talked to a fish cop who stopped to buy some dog food from him just recently, The warden told him that nearly every lion that has been killed on the harvest objective tags this year have been a female. ><

I appears to me most of the outfitters south of the 49th value lions as a non trophy animal. All you have to do is look at the price they charge compared to an elk or deer hunt. Its pathetic!!! Lion hunting has the highest expense yet guides are charging peanuts. Why sell a lion hunt for more?? Kill the first cat in the tree and send them home. At the end of the day is $200/day enough to put your dogs on the line, Thats not even a decent living. It is time for people both outfitters and resident hunters to look at lions as a true trophy animal.

dang guys i've kept up with post and stayed out of it for the most part. if you guys leave every single female your actually asking for a faster decline in the species. leaving a female with inferior genetics will take you out alot faster than weekend warriors or money hungry guides. i know it aint lions but our legal weight limit is set for a reason. when bears age and decline in health they fall in size. the majority of small bears that just give up and tree are older bears with flat teeth. take a lil advice from the western region of north carolina take some females and don't gripe about it, they may be doing you a favor. look at the western north carolina biology maps from 1971 to present date and tell me what effect taking females has on a population. its out of control and they are about to give each hunter a 2nd tag to help control the population. jm 2 cents.

Kinda boils down to a guy wanting to be a guide or a houndsman . ''Most'' guides are more worried about the money end of things. Its easy to think you hit the jackpot when you got a few hundred bucks in your hand and a happy client telling you your the greatest lion hunter since Dale Lee , even if he is going home with a 90lb female. But when the tires are worn out , the truck's broke down ,the snowmobile has shit the bed the wheeler is crashed and you can't catch the damn mule that few hundred bucks doesnt seem like all that much.Never heard of very many rich guides, but i guess there's bound to be another Jim Shockey or Colorado Buck . Most houndoggers i know got all the same problems but they got a 40 or 50 hour a week job, a wife that takes every damn penny and bitches when your hunting cause gone or bitches when your home because your home. Now between thinking about how piss poor our lion hunting is and how damn mean my wife is i ain't got a lot to look forward to till bear hunting .We usually do pretty good bear hunting .... oh.. but by then my dogs will be outta shape and fuel will probably be $7.00 bucks a gallon.Guess i'll just stick to my 50 hour a week job as a Wal Mart greeter and being a human punching bag for my wife.Guess there's always some porn popups on the web to lift my spirits.

How can you tell that a 1 1/2 year old female has genetics so bad that she must be culled when the lion population is what it is? how is that responsible? Maybe that is why the lion population is what it is in the east.

So basicaly what im reading is all you guys that agree with over harvesting females, probably plant a garden then water it till it starts to grown, then get the tiller out and till it all under then wonder why you have no vegetables to eat........DUH..... wake up you have to let your seedlings GROW and REPRODUCE!!!!
