I just got done readin your mumbo jumbo David and I still agree with you. I think you are full of chit still and have never done any of what you are talkin about but I believe you are right on the money without even truly knowing it. I also believe that pure hound strains and other such pure dogs are very inefficient at catchin certain types of game. I too have been attempting what you are talkin about and am having a blast trying it and doing a damn good job at it so far but thats cause I wing it and it works. I do not believe in my heart nor in my mind that there are very many running dogs out there that are good at "CATCHING" coyotes cause I have looked hard and far and wide and most of them suck at it. They run the shit out of em but cant catch them to save their life and when they do at times they cant hold them and usually pretty much just dont do it right. I have "crossbred" some cur blood and even some stag into this type of blood and brother there is a difference. I know you are right about this even though paco says NO! :D

You are still crazy as a pet coon but I love it. Keep it up. I truly believe in what you are saying.

Thanks for the pm's becaue I wouldn't want to miss this stuff. This is good fun!

Well, Dan and Paco agree on one thing: I am crazy. So we all three agree on one thing, and that is some pretty awsome common ground.

It reminds me of a saying I heard that the definition of insanity is making the same mistakes over and over and expecting different results. But if you are talking about bobcat dogs, that is not the definition of insanity, it is the definition of pure bred Walkers.

And you both agree on another thing, all my knowledge about bobcat hunting came from books about bobcat hunting with dogs. Here I will list them for you: uh....................... hmm.....................let's see. Man I am getting really old, and my daughter tells me I must be getting Alzymers disease. I Guess I am proving that to myself because I can not think of one single title of all those books about bobcat hunting with dogs that are out there.

I did really enjoy both of your posts.

Paco, it was fun reading your resume. You are living the dream and it is awsome.

I'll try to clearify one point that you said shows my ignorance (I'll go back and try to find the chapter on it in some of my books) was when I was talking about going from snow to dirt and back again. One thing I have noticed from a few of your posts is that you miss some of the details of what you are responding to, call me an idiot, and then fill in a lot of blanks for something I never said. If you go back and look at the post, you will see nothing about going from snow to dirt and back and forth.

And then you tell me about different types of snow conditions as if you are informing me of something I dont know about. Maybe you are thinking we dont really get a winter or spring in Minnesota.

I was talking about hunting in the summer and going from swamp ground where the cat is actually getting wet, to extremely dry ground. I know you got good dogs Pacojack. So here is a way you can make some money, or at least pay for some of your expenses getting up here. You come on up here next summer. I will take you to our best cat land in the whole state and turn you loose to do your thing. If you can catch a cat in those swamps in those conditions, I will give you $1,000 cash. It's easy money, so come on up. It's not a bet, cause if you dont accomplish it, all you loose is your mouth.

I know that you did not mean I got my hunting knowledge from books, I was just taking a fun ride on what Dan had said. You were talking about my breeding knowledge, and you are ABSOLUTELY right. You might not have noticed (again), but I mentioned in my last post that I am not a breeder. There are only two females I have ever intentionally had bred. One of those crosses (made twice) though, was one of the most powerful that I know of. The results of it are still in evidence 25 years later.

I have studied breeding, because I always wanted to be a breeder. I have spent hours and hours and hours studying breeding and thinking about it, and forming theories that I will never be able to test. My problem is that I have not found dogs that I felt were worthy of breeding. It's kind of the same problem I have had with trying to find a wife.

I have had dogs that I would like to reproduce, but in studying their background, I figured reproducing them would be more likely by going back and getting dogs from the same cross, than from breeding the dog that does not have a stable pedigree.

Quote:" will pm this to you so you get it my freind and God bless you in your endevors I hope they work and keep me posted if you prove me wrong, like I said I am open minded "

Thankyou for the blessing, and I say the same, God bless you my freind. I pray that all your deepest desires are met. You also Dan.
Thanks for keeping me on my toes you guys.

I will take you up on that bet or free money which ever you want to call it but first I want to see your dogs catch a cat first, remember I said if you can catch a cat there so can I. But we might have to do it the next summer because I am starting a new job in Colorado as a Goverment hunter and I think I am going to be real busy this summer.
So.... I have no hard feeling for you, You act as if you were shocked that I would give you my blessings... Wow I am hurt David, I did mean it when I said i hope you find that magic cross and I hope you will post it for me to see. I think you would really like my Jagd/Walker cross anyway that is kind of what you decribed in your post before last.
And I dont know what to tell you about the wife thing other than I would stick to the dogs, they are easier to understand
Hey on the lighter side, I think I will have to post a picture of those Airedale /cur crosses for you I think you will get a kick out of them, might even make you smile. Kind of look like your Lurchers

Do you honestly not see the humor in my posts? If you dont then you are lost more than I ever dreamt you were. I believe what you say bro. I just think you are more dramatic and more full of shit than I could ever be. I am gettin sick of half ass supporting you and your "theories" and you never aknowledging that I am doing just that. Paco, you aint acknowledging nothing and partner, you are wrong. The best dogs in the world "CATCH" game. They dont just run it and they damn sure dont count on you to cheat for them. They catch it. I like what you got to say a bunch Paco and there was one thing that I read and I got to go back and figure it out cause I have been drinkin all afternoon and cant remember right now but it was cool. Just a minute.

I tried

I agree with a lot of what you have to say, but not on quote above. I'm a firm beleiver that critters run/behave different based on their terrain and exposure to hunting. And catching is very dependant on conditions. I know it's tougher to tree some critters in some areas, while it's mighty easy in others. There are generalities but the only real way to find out is to put down on them. Sweet Corn Patch coon in Aug are a far cry from an old winter type layup track, just like a hot-rigged July Bear is not even close to a road-walking Big Bear in Oct.

Very few guys (if any) guys hunt cats when the swamps aren't frozen. If you want a lesson in futility, just give it a whirl. Anyone who enjoys that is just a glutton for punishment in my book. I don't know how you'd ever train a cat dog around here without snow. And even then it's damn long tough process, especially if you've got a job.

I've yet to know anyone around here who has pinned down a breeding program that can consitantly produce crackerjack top dogs. Good serviceable solid hunting dogs, YES. Just not one with an above average consistancy in producing top dogs. The only way is taking good prospects, hunting them Hard and sorting them out. Some got it, some just don't. We've had above average litters, bred them close for generations and then had them turn out a litter full of less than average dogs. Same guys, same dogs, but much different results.

You asked me if I'd wanted a cat dog, would I want one from here or one that had been on a bunch more cats someplace else. I replied I'd want one that I know would work here. I've got a question for you. If you were looking for a bear dog for out there, would you want one from there or one from WI that has been on 40-50-60+ trees or 60-70-80+ runs in a 3 month period? I know we're talking cat dogs here, but I'm just curious.

Some day we'll have to get together and throw some dogs down some place. See what shakes out. Three years ago I'd have felt a bit better about my chances, but I feel I'm a bit light on dog power now.

I agree with you 100% I know that every cats habitat and hunting style and treeing ability is different.
The problem I have Is with someone saying that They have the magic cat dog because cats can not be caught there with anything else.
I can hunt on the east side of Utah and the cats are much easier to catch than on the west side of the state, but I can still catch them. And I guarentee you I can catch them there if they are there and you can catch them, just like I know if you can catch them there,You can catch them here or Arizona or where ever.
No I wouldn't want to buy a older dog from Wi, but not because of the difference in the bear or the states, I would not have any problem buying a pup or young started dog form there. And you know as well as I do that question was like a two sided sword
Any time you would like to dump dogs with me you are welcome to. Light on dogs or not I am not trying to sell you dogs lets jsut go hunt and learn from each other, if you have something that impresses me I will try to get some of that blood and maybe you would do the same and maybe we will just walk away with nothing more than a good freindship :D One way or the other it would be a win win :D

I was talking about hunting in the summer and going from swamp ground where the cat is actually getting wet, to extremely dry ground.

This last summer I probably started 18-20 bobcat tracks and managed to only finish two, and I had to wade water on all but one. I actually seen one cat swimming and a freind of mine also seen a cat swimming while being ran in the summer up here. This was my first summer trying this and let me tell ya I was really second guessing the quality of my cat hounds. All I can say is thank the good Lord for freezing weather and snow. Also I have a good freind and hunting buddie that goes down to Oklahoma and he said 9 out of 10 cats he ran down there treed as compared to here 9 out of 10 will be caught on the ground.
