cougar2 wrote:Devin, just wondered how many Finley River dogs did you hunt and how were they bred to be considered Finley River, not knockin you but who or how is anyone keeping a certain strain going, I am not an expert at breeding just not sure if there are that many breeders out there to keep a strain going. It was well known that John Monroe was a top breeder and the first Finley River dog I owned back in the 70's (FR Joe, FR Kate) was not what I would consider a big game hound w/cold nose, real slow but sure, but I did see some that made top big game hounds w/cold noses, I think there are cold nosed hounds of most all breeds if someone knows how to get it and keep it, but as you know takes more than nose, there is alot goes into breeding hounds, sounds like you know about hounds, if you don't mind what are you breeding and raising? hope you boys don't mind me chimin in I'm new to this, maybe I can learn something, like Tim's opinion too keep it up. thanks.

I have hunted a few over the years and like I said, I even tried to get some real close stuff by calling and talking to Lonnie. I dont' recall what the breeding was of the dogs that I have ran just that they went back to some "Good Finley River bred dogs" and I agree there was nothing that would be concidered super close but some were line bred. I can't remember any of them to be culls but nothing that I like in a dog ( or I would be running them ).
I kind of know where you are going with this Question but I am running Bozo bred dogs that are working for me. One of the few Walker lines that has the fewest Finley River dogs in it. It is hard to look at any walker breeding that doesn't go back to Finley River dogs and alot of them. But looking at a 7 gereration pedigree of one of my dogs it has Mears Finley River Sonny in it once and that is the only Finley River dog in it. And that is on the 7th.

Once agian , I am sure there are some good ones out there, I have just never had the pleasure of hunting with one of them . Devin

I have ran dogs for 26 years now and have always had a finley river in the box. If you look they are there.Cold nosed and track driving dogs. My views are every strand has the possaabilty for a great dog. I use what works. If is not broke do not fix it.The one of my females has finely river both sides.one of the best dogs I have been around. I will keep the old blood as long as I can. Bench show is not might deal but if a dog will run a 2 day old frozen track and stay treed till this fat old guy gets there sign me up and if they do not then they must GO!

I really enjoyed reading this post. I'm looking to out cross or find a decent female. Walker of course. I know Keith Huff and have dogs along his line of dogs. Not trying to bank on his name. I tried to breed a female with his good Cody dog but it didn't take. He then died that year following. I'm so dang giddy about breeding for some time. I'm not talking about for cash, but just seeing the progress of what has been happening with these dogs. I have a male right now that is very cold nosed, gritty, and fast. I agree that for the area you hunt that the nose can be different. Meaning that I have no idea what he may do out west on that type of terrain. Here in Upper Michigan in the northern half, if is very mountainous not with any huge peaks, but granite rock 200- 500 hundred foot changes in elevation. We are only 2000 foot max above sea level. I have had guys come and hunt from the lower and the stamina a dog needs up here is much more than in lower michigan. Feet tend to get tore up in the begining of training season due to terrain. Now that I have rambled on, my point is I would like to hear more about back grounds on Walkers, and what crosses good with the bloodlines I have. This male I really like is out of the Rock River Tuck on top with Sacket Jr and Sackett Jr's Son on the bottom. Little Lipper on the bottom too. I know what most would say, thats tree dog stuff, but I'm just saying this stuff is making it happen in this neck of the woods. I'm not a competition night hunter, just trying to improve dogs out there. My problem is I only know what is happening from people that I talk too when it comes to bloodlines else where. But I have been told by guys that travel west to California and in between that what I have going is working.

Realize this is a year old discussion, but, I talked to John Monroe couple years ago, he told me to his knowledge there wasn/t any of the dogs in the finley river line today that had the nose those old Finley Chief pups had. Have to assume he believed that to be true, or he would have tried to sell me a pup. But Tim must have got a couple throw backs. Al

Nolte wrote:I've got no lock down suggestions as to where to find a cold nosed walker, or any dog for that matter. But I SURE wish I had one. I'd say a couple but I don't want to sound greedy.

I get a kick out threads like this. We treat dogs like machine pressed products that get worked down the line and turned out perfect in mass numbers. Well I've been looking for the factory for a long time but haven't seemed to find it. I have seen a few dogs here/there and a bunch of other decent ones that fill in the gap.

In reality only a handfull of the tracks we try are of the real tough variety. The test is if we can get it going with what's in our box at the time. Some times we find we can't. The ONLY way we'd know if something else could is if we put them down on the SAME track. Everything else is just speculation. And MOST of speculation hinges on Hype. Hype sells dogs, reality doesn't.

Well spoken
