Thanks cobalt, and also bigfoot for the compliments, i have enjoyed everyones opinions, with respect. I did have one guy single register one of my pups, but i have no interest. I want to thank dads dog boy for his honest imput, and wisdom also. Although, him in particular, has different motives, then warming up to me, about my dogs. When he was up last summer, he fell in love with a little gal, at the restraunt, and wanted private speech therapy, with this little honey, and kept wanting to eat there each day, as he said he liked the WI. cheese curds . So i had to call his dad Finney clay, and tell him, his son was wanting to become a dam yankee, and better call him home quick, before it was to late. So boy oh boy, his alternative motives, may cloud his judgemnt, of my dogs. He keeps asking if I lined up that little honey, for a few private, speech therapy lessons, to try and loose that southern draw, but didnt mention, my dogs, or these good cheese curds we have

I will contend that the best dogs come from the hardest hunters. These guys are less interested in making a name for them selves as breeders and making money selling pups. Why would a person not breed best to best or outcross to something that may add to what you alredy have? It is very hard to find great dogs and even harder to find great papered dogs because you have just cut your options in half. If you are just resupplying dogs into your own kennel, who cares if they are papered? As a hunter, why would you breed junk? This atlas or recipe, doesn't have to be in some national registry...these guys running mixed up dogs, with great success I might add, sure don t care about "papers", but I'll bet they have just as good of an idea as to the outcome of a breeding as anyone.

im gonna git me a wolf and hunt that papers or not he will still be a damn wolf at the end of the day. i will shock him so he wont eat hounds,and when the wolves take over i will blend right in. if you cant beat them join them. does anyone know where i can get a good treeing wolf these days or would a running one be better?

C&B,you stated that your goal with your breeding program is to "create a better hound".You also stated that very few of us will ever have the privilege of seeing one of your better hounds.

If you never have the intention of sharing your knowledge and the fruits of your labor with your fellow houndsmen,then why should we care what you choose to do or not to do with your breeding program.It seems to me that the only person your choices effect is you.My observation from reading this thread is........I don't believe you really care what anyone thinks in regards to papers or any other aspect of your breeding program.I think your initial request for opinions was just a rhetorical request.

Here is my take from WI. I haven't seen a wad full of papered dogs yet that get it done. I also haven't seen a bunch of grade dogs. I will say as a rule that it's easier to move on from a grade dog that ain't cutting it than a papered dog.

I think the most consistent dogs come from guys who keep track of what/where the dogs come from and how they ALL turn out. Most guys just hunt what they got and see how it goes.

Like catdogs said, the best dogs come from the hardest to please hunters. If you only take from the papered section of those you are missing out. It's much easier to get better dogs if you take the money out of the equation, just look at the results. If it's working keep going, if not move on. Put them in the woods and see what happens. Whatever is doing the best gets to stick around regaudless of paper/not papered. If you seem something you like, give it a whirl and see what you come up with.

A grade dog can only fall back on what it DOES, not what it's papers says it should do. Let's not forget that the majority of registeries keep track ONLY by it's parents and color. If there was a "game catching registery" I'd be all for it, but any record is only as good as what is reported.

Dogs i have sold out east, have frozen semen off them, and stored out there, at my disposal. I will share my fruits, but your going to pay for it, when buying a dog, until the last year, i only sold finished dogs. Heck, i finally sold two pups to someone i didnt know. I'm making progress As dads dog boy said, my knowledge of this breeding, is somewhere between, my sinusis, and ears. You have given me food for thought to put it on paper, for the day Im gone. I think this question, would be better answered by Finney clay, he will show you 18 of his crosses and pedigree history. Key word show. To my knowledge, there is five guys in place to continue his line and you wont get one, off them either. Why?

i really don't care bout the money myself or the papers. when i have puppies i give first offers to ppl in my group then what is left i place in the hardest hunters homes i can find. i do not charge for my puppies anymore. i would rather place them in places i know i will get an honest evaluation and the best oppurtunity to succeed. i will not keep a dog that can not strike jump or tree its own bear., which means basically i'm never satisfied for the most part. i do have four like that now but its took several years to get to this point. they are results of best to best crosses.

I wonder if a hybred, female in heat, wouldnt be a tool in the tool chest if needed?

train it like a coyote decoy dog probably be very effective.
