( LEON COX AND MERLIN HOLT WERE BOTH INTERN LION HUNTING GUIDES FOR JACK BUTLER UTAH'S MOST FAMOUS LION HUNTER AS HE GOT OLDER. THEY BOTH ACCOMPANIED HIM ON HIS LAST EVER LION HUNT. THEY AS WELL AS GARN BLACKBURN GOT DOGS FROM HIS ORIGINAL MIXED STRAIN, BUT AS THIS STRAIN BEGAN TO WEAKEN THRU TOO MUCH INTENSE IN-BREEDING THEY SOUGHT OUT CHARLIE TANT A FORMER CALIFORNIA LION HUNTER WHO HAD RAISED UP A STRAIN OF FLAG TAILED RUNNING WALKER CROSS DOGS THAT WORKED WELL ON DRY GROUND. BY INFUSING THE BLOOD OF GOMER AND FETUS WITH THE HELP OF NEVADA'S JERRY HUGHES THEY BUILT UP A STRAIN OF WALKER TYPE DOGS THAT CAME SPOTTED MOSTLY WITH EVEN SOME LEMON AND WHITE COLORED DOGS WHICH DENOTED THE RUNNING WALKER BLOOD.THESE DOGS HAD NOSE AND SPEED BUT LACKED SOME IN THE TREEING DEPARTMENT. THEY CONTACTED LESTER NANCE IF INDIANAN WHO WAS THE ORIGINATOR OF THE TREEING WALKER BREED. LESTER STARTED WITH GRADE DOGS AND BY CAREFUL SELECTION FOR TREEING INSTINCT AND EXTREME NOSE CAME UP WITH A LINE IF WALKERS KNOW AS THE NANCE STRAIN THAT SET THE HOUND DOG WORLD IN A SPIN. EVEN TODAY CAREFULLY SELECTED AND MATCHED NANCE BRED WALKER DOGS CAN COMPETE WITH THE BEST OF THE OLD TIME STRAINS ON DRY GROUND AND USUALLY RUN OFF AND LEAVE THEM WHEN THE TRACK WARMS UP. JOKER WAS A PRODUCT OF A LONG LINE OF LESTER'S ORIGINAL STOCK. HE REALLY CROSSED WELL WITH THE SOUTHERN UTAH STRAIN AND MANY OF THE PACKS TODAY CAN TRACE BACK TO THE IS BLOOD INCLUDING THE EARLY DOGS OF JEFF ALLEN. NOTHING LASTS AS IT IS FOR EVER AND JEFF AS WELL AS OTHER DECIDED THEY NEEDED TO SEARCH AND FINE THE BEST OF THE LIVING LINE BRED NANCE LITTLE TOPPER DOGS LEFT TO BREED BACK INTO THEIR, STRAIN. topper AGAIN WAS A VERY GOOD SELECTED SIRE WHO PRODUCED SOME VERY GOOD HOUND. CENTER FIRE SAMPSON OWNED BY DEAN LEMON OF BLANDING HOWEVER CLOSELY RELATED TO TOPPER AGAIN BUT WITH ONE IN-CROSS THAT MAKES HIM A LITTLE STRONGER ON THE NANCE'S LITTE TOPPER LINE HAS PROVEN TO BE A BETTER PRODUCER ESPECIALLY WHEN CROSSED ON SELECTED LINE BREED NANCE FEMALES . STEVEN GALEN TINE OF CALIFORNIA A MASTER WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST AND LION HUNTER NOW HAS THE MOST CONSISTENCE STRAIN OF NANCE WALKER DOGS IN THE NATION WITH MOST PUPS RUNNING AND TREEING WELL BEFORE 10 WEEKS OF AGE. MR. GALEN TINE ALONG WITH HIS HELPERS MIKE LEONARD OF NEW MEXICO AND JOSH WELCH OF UTAH HAVE PROVEN THESE DOGS IN VARIED TERRAINS AND CONDITIONS AND PROVEN THEM TO BE AMONG THE BEST OF TODAY'S HOUNDS FOR DRY GROUND LION AND BOBCAT HUNTING.
Joe House AND john Monroe WERE EARLY FOUNDATION TREEING WALKER BREEDERS WHO DEVELOPED STRAINS THAT ARE ALSO THE BASIS OF MOST OF THE TOP COMPETITION WINNING DOGS TODAY. Monroe's Finley river STRAIN AND Joe's house strain along with James merchants merchant strain can be found along with the earlier Nance strains in every treeing walker dog alive if one goes back far enough.
Marvin Glenn a great friend of mine and the father of warren Glenn was hunting mostly grade lion hounds along the border until 1959 when Walt Disney asked him to helped make a movie called the wetback hound. in this film a registered treeing walker pup was used as the star. Marvin fell in love with the intelligent easily trained walker pup and wanted to buy him when the movie was completed. although Disney would not sell the pup he id let Marvin see the papers and immediately Marven called Lester Nance , Joe house, and Jon Monroe and ordered pups . these foundation dogs are what hi son Warner's pack is still made of today. Warner likes to have at least fifty percent Nance influence in the dogs to keep the size don and the cold trailing ability in track.
Hope this has answered a few questions. Mike
