mike i am the one that mentioned the ultra mag. and are you aware that the 300 rum comes in three power levels of ammunition. .30-06 300 win and full balistic loading. where i hunt we have watchers so sometimes 5-600 yd are taken on bear because of the plains and long ridged pipelines. I love my .35 and my bear was taken with that. alot of bears here are taken with 30-30's. But in our early season a large bear was taken at a decent range with a 300rum and dropped in its tracks. Yes its a fast gun for close range. Yes its a long range gun. No i dont always bear hunt with mine but i want something thats gonna put one down for the count if i take a shot beyond my other guns means. good dogs are hard to come by when a bear is crippled by a less adeuquate gun. if i had a choice other than my .35 it would be a 45-70
